Any predictions anyone?

I think you misplaced the 5 from Scotland's score when you wrote the French one down.

Yours, blindly optimistically........

OK, having followed the New York Times (The Paper of Guesses) sports pages' attempt at predicting exact scores for the NFL for some years (record to date: 2 correct, 464 wrong), I will instead try to predict winning margins:

Wales to beat England by 1. (this post's mandatory controversy content requirement fulfilled!)
France to beat Scotland by 25.
Ireland to beat Italy by 22.

I don't remember whose book it was - Garteh Davies, maybe - but there was a comment that he never wanted to beat England by 50.
Instead, he wanted it to be a controversial last minute try that gave Wales the win by one point, only for TV replays to show that it should never have been given as a try!

Surely that was a newspaper report on the 1999 game at Wembley!!

Indeed!

My preditctions are as follows (I shall follow Pablo away from the suicide that is predicting exact scores):

England beat Wales by 6
France beat Scotland by 2 (look at Frances line-up, I know Scotland are weak, but it's France's 2ndXV)
Ireland beat Italy by 12

Through complete unbiasness and love of no certain country i'll go for:

Wales 21 England 18
France 24 Scotland 26
Italy 18 Ireland 38

Right, just to keep tally of how successful our predictions are, could I suggest a tally system like the one my friends and I use in our NFL predictathon. Very simple:

Attempt to predict winning margins.
Score one penalty point for each point by which you miss the exact margin.
Score an additional ten penalty points for predicting the wrong winner.
Lowest penalty points total at end of 6 Nations is the winner.

I'll demonstrate this week's scores (for Wayne and Rob, I've ignored the exact scores and just taken the margins):

Wayne predicted:
Wales 21 England 24 (Margin: England by 3 - 5 points away from actual result, plus wrong winner = 15 points)
France 52 Scotland 6 (Margin: France by 46, actual was 7 = 39 points)
Italy 16 Ireland 42 (Margin: Ireland by 26, actual was 11 = 15 points)

Wayne's 1st week total = 69 points.

I predicted:
Wales to beat England by 1. (actual margin was 2 = 1 point)
France to beat Scotland by 25.(actual margin was 7 = 18 points)
Ireland to beat Italy by 22. (actual margin was 11 = 11points)

Pablo's 1st week total = 30 points

Simon G predicted;
England beat Wales by 6 (8 points away from truth, plus 10 for wrong winner = 18 points)
France beat Scotland by 2 (= 5points)
Ireland beat Italy by 12 (=1 points)

Simon G's 1st week total = 24 points

Rob predicted:

Wales 21 England 18 (=1 point)
France 24 Scotland 26 (=19 points)
Italy 18 Ireland 38 (=9 points)

Rob's 1st week total = 29 points

didds predicted:
england by less than 7 OR more than 20 (I'll be kind and pretend that said "England by 7", so = 19 points)
ireland by 15 (=4 points)
france by 15 (=8 points)

didds's 1st week total = 31 points

So, our leaderboard reads:

Simon G 24 points
Rob 29 points
Pablo 30 points
didds 31 points
Wayne 69 points

Like the taxman, I can't be bothered to do this every week, so some self assessment would be good!

Anybody wants to join in that didn't make a prediction this week, you can start on 40 points (the average of our scores rounded to the nearest 10).

See, as I hear every week, what do I know about rugby!!!! :)

Still, if we are talking 6 Nations, ermmmmm WALES WALES!!!! :) :) :)

Self assessment!!!!!!!

I'm sure you can spare that time overthe 5 weeks Paul, lol.

Italy v Wales = wales by 13
Scotland v Ireland = Scotland by 3
England v France = France by 10

Missed out on week 1, but in retrospect I reckon I'd have been way off. I'd have been France by 30, England by 10, and Ireland by 20. Don't know what that score would be, but I'll definitely settle for 40!

Round 2:

Italy by 3
Ireland by 7
Draw for England/France

In order to maintain my position at the top of the table, I shall be holding back my predicitons until the teams are announced (in particular, Ireland re. centre partnership).

Now I know the inside info (i.e. BOD and D'Arcy are out, but then everyone knows that now!) I can make my predictions:

Wales beat Italy by 10
Ireland beat Scotland by 3
England beat France by 7

Pablo
13-02-05, 20:02
Actual Margins:

Wales beat Italy by 30
Ireland beat Scotland by 27
France beat England by 1

soooo.... Predicatathon scores as follows:

Rob:

Italy v Wales = wales by 13 - 17 points
Scotland v Ireland = Scotland by 3 - 30 + 10 for wrong winner = 40
England v France = France by 10 - 9 points

Rob's 2nd week total = 66 points

Wayne:

Italy v Wales = Wales by 6 - 24 points
Scotland v Ireland = Ireland by 3 - 24 points
England v France = France by 18 - 19 points

Wayne's 2nd week total = 67 points

Me:

Wales by 11 - 19 points
Ireland by 8 - 19 points
France by 4 - 3 points

My 2nd week total = 41 points

Jim:

Italy by 3 = 33 plus 10 points for wrong winner = 43
Ireland by 7 - 20 points
Draw for England/France - 1 for margin, 5 for not predicting a winner (? draws never happen in the NFL, so this is an impromptu solution to the problem!) = 6

Jim's 2nd week total = 69 points

Simon:

Wales beat Italy by 10 - 20 points
Ireland beat Scotland by 3 - 24 points
England beat France by 7 - 8 plus wrong winner = 18
points

Simon's 2nd week total = 62 points

Pablo

Week Two Leaderboard

Pablo 30 + 41 = 71
Simon G 24 + 62 = 86
Rob 29 + 66 = 95
didds 31 + NP(66) = 97
Jim NP(40) + 69 = 109
Wayne 69 + 67 = 136

NB, didds' not playing this week was scored as the average of all week two scores, plus a 5 point penalty, just as I did for Jim after week one.

Dear me, I am useless at this!!

Well, the scores are not exactly as expected are they?, lol
