View Full Version : 6 Nations Predictathon

Right, after two rounds, this is how things look:

Week Two Leaderboard

Pablo 30 + 41 = 71
Simon G 24 + 62 = 86
Rob 29 + 66 = 95
didds 31 + NP(66) = 97
Jim NP(40) + 69 = 109
Wayne 69 + 67 = 136

A reminder of the rules:

Attempt to predict the winning team and the margin of victory for every game of the 6 Nations tournament.

Points are a bad thing and are awarded according to how badly awry your prediction is.

An exact prediction gains you a bonus of -5 points.

You receive one point for each actual game point by which your prediction is adrift. eg. predicting a winning margin of 4 points for a game that actual ends 21-14 earns you 3 points.

You receive a penalty of 10 points in addition to your margin points for predicting the wrong winner. For instance, taking the Wales v England game from the first round as an example, if someone had predicted England to win by 4 points, they would score 16 points: 6 for being away from the true result by 6 points, and 10 for the wrong winner.

If you incorrectly predict a draw, you receive a penalty of 5 points on top of the margin points.

This is the system some friends and I used to use for our NFL predictathon, and we found it to work pretty fairly - not too much effort required on the parts of the players or the scorer either :D

Players joining at Week 3 will start on 106 points, this being the average of the current scores, plus a penalty of 20 points.

Players already in the game who miss a week's predictions will be credited with the average of all that week's scores, plus a penalty of 10 points.

Predict away!

This is the least confident I've been in this year's predictathon, and I wouldn't be at all surpirsed if I've got every winner wrong...

Well, I try not to make predictions I am not that clever but I do get to dash around the greensward even when the snow is coming in horizontally. Cancelled games? Ring dear Dave on the mobile and he will fix another for you on the hoof and in a trice, there is never a shortage of games in Hampshire. I am not sure how good he is with computers though.

Finished today just in time to cheer on the rampant reds. Well done lads, I am not sure that we shall see a better example of commitment and national pride. That is what this game is all about. As an Englishman, today I would be proud to be Welsh.

Ye of little faith in the Scots, hioe ye all pay dear for that mistake, har.

What a game between Wales and France though eh? Fantastic. Thought Paul Honiss had a good game too

Hey Wayne, Just take faith in the fact that you can only improve, lol.

BTW if your society has a website let us know, 1 it can be graded, 2 I can make you an avatar (if I can get it from them)

Thanks for the encouragement Rob!

No website for my society, we have our monthly meeting tonight and I am going to table the lack of web facilites for our society (for all the Welsh Socities actually) and use this Site to show examples of what others are doing

Robert Burns

If you get enough members in here (10 or more) I am happy to provide private forums for your society's use.

It could be a nice start?

I figure I can still win this. All I need is for Pablo to get all three predictions for the wrong team and the points difference at least 15 points wrong in all three cases. And everyone else needs to have a bit of a mare too. Oh, and I need to predict the results of all three matches exactly. So here are the correct results for the final round of the 2005 Six Nations....

England will scrape home by 20 points against Scotland

France will proceed at a gentle jog and get 35 more than the Azurri

and the decider....

Wales by a cool 18 (now where's my family history folder with evidence of my Great Great Great Uncle Taff, twice removed, through three cousins...)

Sospan fach yn berwi ar y tan...

Waynepipmad

ok, my go

but... do I predict a Wales win, or shall I go for Ireland in hopes of jinxing it! hmmmm!!!

ok, here goes

Wales to beat Ireland by 15, GRAND SLAM WINNERS!!! :p
England to beat Scotland by 20 (here's to you Rob :) !!)
France to beat Italy by 52

Simon Griffiths
15-03-05, 16:03
As your closest rival, Pablo, (how different it could have been if I had been able to use my PC last week!), I'm very glad you didn't match me score for score, you'd virtually have it in the bag with everyone else about 50+ points away!

Come on 3 EXACT scores (1 better than the other week!)

Pablo
15-03-05, 19:03
No, Simon, matching your scores would have been unsporting and, worse still, uninteresting!

We should do this every year...

Robert Burns
16-03-05, 00:03
Indeed, it will be easier when I implement the new system too, we can use it on the rugby 7's world cup etc, or anything in fact!

Simon Griffiths
19-03-05, 22:03
Have you set that up yet? Bit late for the 7s World Cup if you haven't!
Perhaps:
Remainder of Super 12
Tri Nations
Heineken Cup KO Stages

Nice to see that true rugby spirit is present in predictathons as well as the game itself!

bugger - somehow never got my predictions thru this week (god knows how!). Nopt that it would have made much difference to teh overall league anyway,a lthough ironically I might well have called correctly this week obverall! I would have had France and Enmgland down for a win... possibly not by as many points for the French. And I _think_ I'd have plumped for a welsh win but not by so many again. nemmind. Cheers for the efforts anyway Pablo!

You're very welcome. A nice bit of harmless fun and added spice to the tournament, I feel. I could probably devise a spreadsheet to do it automatically if I put my mind to it, and if we do this again for other competitions, I will do so.
