View Full Version : [SUGGESTION] Re organisation idea ..

With Robbie's rebuild on its way I have been thinking about the forum , and have an idea for a radical reorganization of the site .hear me out

We should have five forums

1 Reffing Basics - your first thirty games
In this forum we keep it simple. It's practical advice for people at the start of the journey . We talk about what happens 90% of the time, not what happens 1% we give the conventional majority view, not the minority or esoteric the forum is a constructive useful guide to making the most of your first thirty game

2 reffing grassroots rugby
In this forum we discuss how to ref and manage the community game. The game we all know and love, the game where we don't have stadium clock or TMO, we probably don't have AR . The palyers are amateur, of varying skill levels and go to work on Monday, they play for fun. How do we make sure they, and we, have the best game of rugby we can

3 reffing youth rugby
For the special challenges of reffing kids, and handling the parents.

4 reffing the professional game
This is where we discuss what we see on TV, where we analyse TMO footage . We talk about reffing professional athletes using WR guideline and latest rules. Did they did they get it right ?

5 the laws forum
This is for geeks .here we discuss law changes , weird scenarios and what did the law makers really mean by that . Here we work out exactly how many angels docdance on a pinm Law Reference please?

Each forum would use the same set of prefix lables (scrum tackle mail etc) to help find stuff and you can then easily track the same topic in different forums

In today's world we don't need forums organiaed by topic, Google and labels does that. instead we have forums dedicated to different audiences and different styles of discourse.

I think this would make RR a much more useful and indeed harmonious site

What do you think ?

Lots of merit in that CR I reckon.

As a newcomer I find the current structure vastly overcomplicated for the level of traffic. I think your suggestion is sound and would certainly meet my needs as a new ref better.

What I like about it is that it makes clear the context of the question

Take a single idea .. a question about how to handle a scrum collapse .

That topic could come up in any of the five forums, and would receive really different answers , given the context .

It would automatically provide a context for each question and would suggest the style and nature of the answer given .. are you

.Advising a brand new ref about how to handle scrum collapse

..talking amongst experienced refs about diagnosing collapses in the community game

.. thinking about the challenges of inexperienced mismatched scrums in the youth game

.. analysing that weird PK decision which won us the England South Africa game

.. discussing the meaning of Law 20

These would be different discussions , at the moment we tend to talk about all five at the same time

Although I don't disagree with what you suggest....I don't think it will work out the same in reality as it is in your head. Forum users just dont compartmentalise their thinking aligned with the "rules" when they're on a rant! I just doubt youll succeed to being able to control the users to obey the levels.

I love the line of logic, but will throw a spanner. I commonly just use the "new posts" search feature, so I get all newly updated threads regardless of the forum they're in. The search page does show which forum each post is in, but I don't pay close attention to that... and indeed had to go do a sample search to check this was the case! If others are in similar habits, then we might not get the clean divides you're hoping for, especially between the "basics" and "grass-roots" forum...

The reason we pay no attention to the forum at the moment is that there are 159 different ones and they are all the same ... Knowing the forum would make no difference to the answer you give

I definitely like the idea of separating the "what should I do?" posts from the esoteric law discussions.

Alternatively we could have these forums instead:

Angels dancing on pinheads aka Choppertown
I'm right and you're wrong
Made up laws cos its easier
WTF just happened?

Yes, I think that both types of discussion would benefit from separation

And for those who find esoteric law discussion immensely frustrating, it would be more easily avoided

And with the five simple forums above it would be easy enough for the mods to move a thread where necessary.

Basically the forums I am suggesting amount to

What should I do (beginners)
What should I do (grassroots)
What should I do (youth)
What did he do & was it right? (pro game)
Esoteric Law Discussion

Forum #1 would hopefully bring back to RugbyRefs something that we have probably lost sight of over the last few years

It occurs to me that an analysis of current usage would be helpful, so I produced the following list of current forums. Whatever titles we choose, there is sure to be a lot that doesn't quite fit eg where would discussion about the RWC fit in crossref's list? Law discussions vary from those seeking basic knowledge to angels dancing.

I suspect almost everyone accesses via the latest posts, or today's posts feature

I suspect almost everyone accesses via the latest posts, or today's posts feature.. perhaps you have stats that would confirm or disprove that ?

Part of the problem is that threads start off as "what should I do?" and then by post 327 have turned into the esoteric

I like the idea of a separate «*Angels dancing on pinheads*» forum, aka come back Chopper all is forgiven.
Oops, almost forgot the :sarc:
