View Full Version : Predictathon Time!
OK folks, Here we go again! After winning the last one by two measly points, it's time we jumped back on the wagon for the Autumn internationals. There are a total of 17 matches between 6 Nations teams and other touring countries, so this will give everyone a chance despite missing last weekend's fixtures. Same rules apply as per the Lions Tour as below:
A reminder of the rules:
Attempt to predict the winning team and the margin of victory for every game of the remaining autumn internationals.
Points are a bad thing and are awarded according to how badly awry your prediction is.
An exact prediction gains you a bonus of -5 points.
You receive one point for each actual game point by which your prediction is adrift. eg. predicting a winning margin of 4 points for a game that actual ends 21-14 earns you 3 points.
You receive a penalty of 10 points in addition to your margin points for predicting the wrong winner. For instance, taking the Wales v England game from the first round of this year's 6N as an example, if someone had predicted England to win by 4 points, they would score 16 points: 6 for being away from the true result by 6 points, and 10 for the wrong winner.
If you incorrectly predict a draw, you receive a penalty of 5 points on top of the margin points.
If you miss a prediction for this predicatathon, you will be credited with the average number of points for that match PLUS a penalty of 10 points, which should hopefully have the desired effect (since it's based on averages, it would otherwise be possible to score better than the dedicated regulars who get it wrong that week)... This will be indicated by NP, followed by the score in brackets. If you miss a weekend of predictions, then you're pretty much screwed.
Predictions edited after the match in question has started will be ignored, treated as if no prediction had been made, PLUS a supplementary sportsmanship penalty of 25 points.
The matches are as follows:
11/11/2005 Wales v Fiji
12/11/2005 Ireland v New Zealand
12/11/2005 France v Canada
12/11/2005 England v Australia
12/11/2005 Scotland v Argentina
19/11/2005 Ireland v Australia
19/11/2005 England v New Zealand
19/11/2005 France v Tonga
19/11/2005 Italy v Argentina
19/11/2005 Wales v South Africa
19/11/2005 Scotland v Samoa
26/11/2005 Scotland v New Zealand
26/11/2005 Wales v Australia
26/11/2005 France v South Africa
26/11/2005 England v Samoa
26/11/2005 Italy v Fiji
26/11/2005 Ireland v Romania
That's 17 in Total, so this should be more than enough. Anyone care to start the ball rolling for this weekend? Remember to get them in by Friday night as Wales play Fiji. You only need to get this weekend's in first. You never know who may get injured/replaced...

Bryan, thanks for carrying the torch for me! I had intended to do a Predictathon for the AIs, but my new job really doesn't leave me the time. Yesterday was a 12-hour day and I thought I'd got off lightly...
I'll try to get some predictions in before the w/end...

You only need to get this weekend's in first.
If you want to get them ALL in at once that's ok. BUT I won't be looking at tabulating anything later than each weekend. Feel free to go back in and edit your scores after each week if you need or those of you who went ahead already. Editing scores after the match has been played will earn you extra points, so be careful!

lol
Do you know if it will be raining yet?

It's in Scotland. Of course it will be.
And to prove it, this is what I found when I checked the weather forecast a few days after I arrived. Begs why we pay meteorologists up here in the first place.

Wales v Fiji
I think Wales can bounce back quite well here. Wales by 37
Ireland v New Zealand
NZ to make it two in a row, Ireland won't be strong enough despite NZ re-shuffle. New Zealand by 6
France v Canada
Sadly, quite an obvious winner here. France by 40
England v Australia
The two worst performing teams in world rugby? The battle of the floundering titans could be embarassing for whoever loses. Home advantage the key. England by 12
Scotland v Argentina
This will be a really good, tight game, two quite equally matched teams on their day. Depends if the Argies get the French contingent, (which they did for the South Africa game). Argentina by 8

I'll be in France for the weekend for obvious reasons, so I won't be able to put the results together until Monday morning.
Simon Thomas and Ex-Lucy!
I don't want to know the actual score- just the winning margin! It makes no difference if NZ win 134-100 or 50-16, it's the spread that counts! Go back and change it b/c frankly I can't be bothered to do the basic math and I can't bill clients for it.
Cheers,

I have to say, the last time I ever change my predictions! I added about 15 points to my total by changing NZ winning margin!
Well, I had three under 5, and two over 30!
My total (tbc by Bryan) was a less than thrilling 36+2+32+4+4 = 78
Betters my pretty atrocious 99!
Damn, I think I got 84 points in total
Fiji v Wal = 25
Aus v Eng = 11
Nz v Ire = 40
Arg v Sco = 2 :D
Fra v Sam = 6 :)

That is: Simon John Griffiths Home Run
I thought we'd finished with the mis-reading of my username (as happened when I first joined). Just call me Noddy everyone, it seems to be much easier, plus as was stated at the time, it would alieviate the problem of a disproportionate number of referees named Simon.

As for prediction time:
Ireland v Australia
Australia are just too woeful upfront. Even Ireland's pack will have enough dominance for them to make the most of. Ireland by 7.
England v New Zealand
It will be New Zealand's toughest test. So? ...New Zealand by 5.
France v Tonga
Straight forward thrashing. France by 50.
Italy v Argentina
This one could be another interesting encounter, just like the Scotland v Argentina match was. Italy by 6.
Wales v South Africa
This will either be tight or the 'boks will run away with it. I'm interested to see South Africa's new defence system - supposedly called the washing machine method! South Africa by 12.
Scotland v Samoa
It'll be a good match (considering the teams involved ;) ). Scotland by 8

How close was that!?
England 19 - 23 New Zealand
Winning Margin of 4, a hell of a lot closer than predicted. But perhaps England could have (or even should have) won the match.
Feeling a little dejected now, but the intensity at the end of the match was incredible: on the pitch, in the stands and emotionally.

I'm particularly annoyed that I was only one point out with my predicted winning margin! Still, better than most of you pessimists! ;)
I'm not bitter, but dropping 24 Predictathon points in the last two matches just on 2 VERY late tries - ugh!
Anyone else thinking of changing their name to Br(i/y)an?
Here we go after the weekend. A few of you failed to send in Week 2 predictions, so naturally you've dropped down the "Rugby Refs Order of Merit Table".

Phew - that's better after last week's disaster !
And what an amazing coincidence at Twickenham - me in seat 214 and ex-Lucy in 216 ! About a 1 in 60,000 chance.
Good to meet you ex-Lucy, but shame about final result.

Please tell me that one of you had the foresight to bring a camera and take a picture for the website?
I'll be down in the Borders for the Society dinner in 2 weeks, so if I meet the Changlengs I'll grab a photo. We've already got one of Simon with Wayne Barnes, so let's keep up the "celebrity referee" photos whenever we get the chance.

Sorry Bryan, but I believe there is a mistake. I did my predictions for last weekends results on page 4 of this thread.
Everything now fixed. Didn't go back that far as I thought I had already taken care of these on Friday before the weekend. THANKS!
-Bryan
Also, I picked up 44 points instead of -5 for predicting the SA v. Wales game right!!!!
That's b/c excel thinks SA is different from South Africa (which technically is correct). I must learn to convert all the abbreviations. Sorry! Well done, btw.

My predicitions/build-up for this weekend's matches:
Scotland v New Zealand
NZ to secure first Grand Slam since 70s with a more than comfortable victory.
NZ by 45
Wales v Australia
Wales haven't looked good. Neither have Australia until last week. 'Form' is the guide here - if you can have form after one match!
Australia by 8
France v South Africa
This would be a very good match to watch - as such I intend to on Sky. Some open rugby, and a good battle upfront.
South Africa by 6
England v Samoa
Samoa showed their quality in the 2003 RWC, and are always tough opposition. But they haven't got the Chiropractor, nor a host of other big name players. England to take the form from Aus/NZ matches, plus better backs (JSD in particular), and comfortably win.
England by 47
Italy v Fiji
Two of the top, non-elite nations. Fiji pushed a depleted Wales team close, but Italy's 6N experience to show through.
Italy by 8
Ireland v Romania
Dare I say it again? Foregone conclusion - sadly. Not all that long ago, this would have been a tight match.
Ireland by 71
Scotland v New Zealand - NZ by 70
Wales v Australia - draw
France v South Africa - South Africa by 15
England v Samoa - England by 40
Italy v Fiji - Fiji by 8
Ireland v Romania - Ireland by 20
26/11/2005 Scotland v New Zealand - NZ by 52
26/11/2005 Wales v Australia - Australia by 13
26/11/2005 France v South Africa - South Africa by 8
26/11/2005 England v Samoa - England by 37
26/11/2005 Italy v Fiji - Itay by 9

Well done Bryan - for the second time !
Maybe we should set up as match score predictors for the IRB or Sky Sports ? We seem to be pretty accurate.

Don't think I would be employed with Sky Sports, lol.
