  • Possible Law Changes

I am led to believe there are certain law changes being discussed and I have come to hear of a few more that I am happy to share with you.

    Scrum Cadence:

The scrum cadence is proposed to change to Crouch - Touch - Set

The reason for this change is believed to be because SANZAR has accepted that 'Pause' is a nothing word in the situation, and the 'Set' is better as it's a one syllable word, as opposed to 'Engage', a 2 syllable word.

This is probably in addition to the requirement for straight and steady before the ball is allowed to be put in.

    Ruck:

The ruck will have a time limit to play the ball of 5 seconds, this is to stop teams wasting game time. I would like to believe that the 5 seconds will be from the time the ball has been one by one side or another, but this is just my assumption. It may be that the whole ruck can only be 5 seconds after which a scrum is called, I hope it isn't.

    Maul:

The maul will have a change to give the scrum after an unsuccessful maul to the team moving forward prior to it becoming unsuccessful.

    Drop Kicks:

Unsuccessful drop kicks will result in a scrum back if they go dead.

So, what do we think of these rumours, we know the opinion of the maul change is divided from posts on this forum, so opinions on these additions will, I'm sure, be divided.

      1. Excellent. I have been an advocate of the three step engagement since seeing it in action in NZ last year. Effectively it would be Crouch (pause) Touch (pause) Set.

      2. Not convinced. When is the 5 seconds going to start. If the SH can see it, but the ref can't, then what? If the ref has started is count, how will the SH know... a "use it" call? (Dickie E won't like that!). Personally, I think this is an attempt to gloss over a bigger issue, the endless pick & drives in the last few minutes of each half.. Also, I can see it creating problems in some back-lines.

      3. Better than what we have now, but some teams will spend all day mauling and scrummaging... how exciting! . I'd rather see the combination approach I suggested in another thread...http://www.rugbyrefs.com/showthread....l=1#post186330

      1) is definitely good
      - the command to pause is superfluous (they already are paused...)
      - SET is probably better than ENGAGE as ENGAGE does seem to me to be more of a command to make a hit ..
(engines to warp speed ..... Engage!)

      2) 5 secs is too prescriptive. Why not use something like the U19 Laws on scrums

      20.9 (k) (U19 Variations)
Ball must be released from scrum. A player must not intentionally keep the ball in the scrum once the player’s team has heeled the ball and controls it at the base of the scrum.
      Sanction: Free Kick

this does the job, makes teams play the ball, and avoids the type of problems Ian Cook mentions above.

I don't know whether the word 'set' is better than using 'in'.

In French...... FTPE (Flexion puis - Touchez - Pause - Entree). I have heard the first stage shortened to "Flex puis" on Top 14

In Spanish.... ATPF (Acuclillarse - Tocar - Pausa - Formen)

Don't know what it is in any other languages.

i thought in french it was:

      Flexion
      Touchez
      Stop
      Entree

at least that's what it sounds like on ESPN. not that it matters of course, same number of syllables.

When I was in France in 2009 I was told to use: Flexion, Lisez (I assume, it was said lee-yay), Stop, Entrez.

well the number of syllables doesn't seem to matter too much anyway.

Lincoln Park D3 @ Peoria - league opener Starting the fall league season off with a bang, teams are fairly even. I expect a lot of chasing high balls and long kicks from the home side.

Brent Impey Well, I am not sure that it is entirely the NH fault but I do agree with the main thrust .. if a player is no longer wanted by NZ or England or whoever, they could serve a spell and then go back to a country of origin. I don't see much downside in that

Well, it’s happened: https://www.rugbyworldcup.com/update Never mind the arguments about a tournament in typhoon season or reschedules. Is there any other means besides a scoreless draw that could be used to settle these problems? I’m guessing not, but curious to know if other less visible...
