  • Summer appointments for Internationals Announced

Well there are a lot of surprises in the Summer appointments this year, and I'm not sure how much can be read into them.

After Walsh's high profile game in Cardiff he has been given only one appointment of the British Lions v The Barbarians in Hong Kong. I believe he is being rested for The rugby Championship as he can only referee the Argentina & South Africa games (So it would be daft to send him there twice).

There are tests for the RFU's JP Doyle, Argentina's Pastrana who made his debut as a Super Rugby Official last season, and has been named on the SANZAR Panel this year, the ARU's Angus Gardner and NZRU's Garret Williamson.

But who got the Lions tests? Well Joubert was a given, but who between Poite, Pollock & Peyper would get the other two? Well experience has been chosen with Pollock & Poite being given the tests.

The club tour will be shared between Glen Jackson, Jaco Peyper & Jarome Garces, with the Newcastle game being given to the ARU (I expect Angus Gardner to get a run).

    Referee appointments are:

    25 May - Japan v Tonga - PNC - Angus Gardner (ARU)

26 May - England v Barbarians - Leighton Hodges (WRU)

Which led to an interesting exchange with Akuma

Their posting which has now come down altogther celebrated the fact that SW had been given the opener, because he's bad at scrums.
I then opined that their celebration of Joubert seemed a bit off, given his handling of the scrums.
They then accused CJ of having an anti-NH bias.
Which prompted me to tell them that they just lost my Society's business.

Mysteriously, the whole post has now come down.

No problem with saying a referee has a problem with a phase of the game. But I'm a bit POed that an organization that this site seems to be trying to foster a positive relationship thinks its OK to make an accusation of bias.

I just popped an audio interview with John Jeffrey, the Match Official Selection Committee Chairman on www.rugbyreferee.net - worth 9 minutes of your evening/morning.

Good to see him focus some effort on the smaller nations referees as well as the big appointments we've all been musing on through the day.

Fiji - USA could be an interesting game for Greg Garner, but I don't anticipate fireworks at the Japan Wales match.

Wayne Barnes doing NZ vs France - could be fun :-)

The Gate is dead! Long live the Gate!

NKW brought this up in January but the thread didn't get much traction then. So now that the trials are in the 2018 Laws I'm wondering what the impact on the game is. 2017 Laws (d) At a tackle or near to a tackle, other players who play the ball must do so from behind the ball and from...

Kicking the ball in a tackle?

    Thread Starter: ctrainor

Incident this week got me thinking. Red kick long down the pitch an the chase is on. Black fullback drops on ball, regains his feet and is immediately tackled by green chaser and brought to ground. Support from both teams arrive quickly, ruck is formed but momentum is with red who in the act of...

In compiling an instructional of referee signals I could not find a signal for "no grasp in the tackle". Any suggestions?
