On the 18th September at 2000hrs GMT Jaco Peyper will follow a line of distinguished referees in blowing the Albert Freethy whistle to signal the start of the England v Fiji Pool A game and with it the start of the Rugby World Cup 2015. RWC 2015 will be Jaco’s first and it marks the highlight of the 35 year old lawyer’s career so far.
A native of Bloemfontein and an old boy of Grey College, like lots of similar boys he dreamt of being a Springbok. A number of serious injuries put paid to the young Peyper’s scrum half career by the age of 20 and his wish to stay involved in the sport he loves led him into coaching school children whilst at University. As part of the coaching he had to referee some school games and the rest, as they say, is history.

Jaco rose through the ranks in South Africa quickly, making his Super Rugby debut in 2008 while still in his 20s. In 2011 he was an Official in the iRB Junior World Championship and refereed the final between New Zealand and England. 2012 saw his elevation to the iRB’s Elite Panel and he presided over Scotland’s win over Australia in Newcastle – his first Tier 1 international. He has continued to be appointed to more and more prestigious games and finished the recent 2015 season in the Southern Hemisphere refereeing the Super Rugby Final between the Hurricanes and the Highlanders in Wellington.

Jaco joins RWC 2011 Final referee Craig Joubert as South Africa’s referee representatives in this year’s competition.

By the end of the tournament Jaco will be familiar with most of the M1 motorway. During the pool stages Jaco is due to referee at 4 venues in three cities with a trips to Newcastle and Leicester to add to the opener at Twickenham and a trip to the Olympic Park Stadium. AR appointments will see him at Brighton, Milton Keynes and Birmingham.

      Hullo Mr. Burns,
      fancy seeing you on here.
I thought the game yesterday was well reff'd by Mr. Peyper. (Others may beg to differ.)

Interestingly, while Mr. Peyper is the youngest of the 12 appointed referees, he is far from being the least experienced.

I wonder how the game would be if we, referees, actually implemented the Tackle Law?

Tackle Law PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES Tacklers must: Immediately release the ball and the ball-carrier after both players go to ground. Immediately move away from the tackled player and from the ball or get up. Be on their feet before attempting to play the ball. Allow the tackled player to...

Right, a simple one so the newbies can get involved too. Since the network is largely suspended, we'll play the Cambridge Standard Rules, with broken escalators as wild. I'll start: Chalfont & Latimer
