  • RWC2015 Referees - Jérôme Garcès

Jérôme Garcès was born in Pau on 24 October 1973, he is five foot eleven inches and twelve stone eight pounds weight. The 41 year old is married with two children.

In Jérôme's spare time he likes nothing better than watching his young boys playing rugby at Laruns.
Jérôme himself played on the wing and at full-back for ES Arudy as a junior, then at US Mourenx, before coming back to play for the firsts at ES Arudy. At the time he refereed on Saturdays and played on Sundays. However a fractured wrist ended his playing career.

Jérôme followed his fathers footsteps and took up the whistle in order to stay involved in the game. Sadly Jérôme's father, Réne, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 69.

Jérôme has been a referee since 1998. In 2006 he began refereeing Top 14 games, initially juggling with his job at Turboméca in Bordes, before finally becoming a full-time referee in 2010.

Jérôme is known in France for his distinctive whistle tones; which he puts down to holding the whistle correctly.

After a successful 2009 Junior World Championship in Japan, he took charge of his first Test match, England v Barbarians in 2010.

Jérôme was an Assistant referee in the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand where he ran touch in four matches during the pool stages.

Jérôme has said that the highlight of his career to date has to be his first Six Nations match, Italy v England on 11 Feburary 2012, but that's surely about to change, as he has always hoped to referee a Rugby World Cup game.

South Africa v Japan will be his first game in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Jérôme is no stranger to Southern Hemisphere sides either, taking charge of some warm-up games during the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia and has since refereed in The Rugby Championship.

During last year's England v Wallabies Autumn International he was commended by both coaches for his high level of fitness during the match.

Lincoln Park D3 @ Peoria - league opener Starting the fall league season off with a bang, teams are fairly even. I expect a lot of chasing high balls and long kicks from the home side.

How does a player become "Suitably Trained and Experienced" to scrummage unless he has taken part in a real scrum at least once?
