  • RWC 2015 Referee - Pascal Gazre

    image Huw Evans Picture Agency*

With just a handful of tier one Internationals to his name, Pascal Gazre is one of the most inexperienced test referees in the RWC team. One of three French referees in this years Rugby World Cup, Pascal has been looked upon highly by the World Rugby Referee selectors. Pascal is also a graduate of the Junior World Championships in 2009 & 2010.

His most prominent match to date has been the New Zealand v Argentina game in the 2014 Rugby Championship.

Born 1977 in Les Landes in SW France, the 38 year old referees first love was basketball, but he also played flanker for US Dax and it was there, with time on his hands while serving several-week suspension, that he took up refereeing - at first being involved in youth games. Pascal continued to referee and play for a number of years until deciding, at the young age of 25, that his potential as a referee was far greater than as a player.

He rose quickly through the French ranks, making his Top 14 debut in 2005/6 and refereeing his first international (Barbarians v South Africa) in 2010.

Pascal has also refereed in the Pro12 and the European Championship, and in June 2015 he was in the centre for the Top 14 Final.

Pascal has currently been appointed to referee four games for the group stages of the Rugby World Cup, these are:

    • Australia v Uruguay
    • New Zealand v Georgia
    • South Africa v USA
    • Argentina v Namibia

    Removal of post-protector mid-game

    Thread Starter: oliver

Here's one I've never seen before. In the Bay of Plenty v Counties Manukau game this weekend, BOP are attacking the CM line. One of the CM players removes the post-protector (let's assume he just wanted to defend the line more easily and it wasn't a more cynical removal). The referee immediately...

    Another odd one

    Thread Starter: crossref

From my interesting game at the weekend I award a PK to black inside their own 22m and play advantage as they have the ball, and an opportunity to counter attack , black centre gets away and hoofs the ball a long way down the pitch . but it bounces into touch . I come back for the PK and...

I hate these weird touch scenarios !

    Thread Starter: crossref

From my game yesterday, green kick for touch , black 11 jumps from the field of play to try and knock the ball back in play , but his knock is unsuccessful, the ball still lands in touch (as does black 11) So whose throw is it ? It all depends on whether the ball had passed the plane, doesn't...

    ruck in 7s

    Thread Starter: Dickie E

reffed a 7s tournament yesterday. White player tackled and lays the ball back (with hands on it) to team mate. 2 Blue players contest the ruck and blow the White team mate away such that the White tackled player is left on the ground holding the ball for 1, 2, 3, 4 seconds with no other...

    New ruck/tackle etc.

    Thread Starter: Balones

Apologies for starting a new thread on this but I have been reading various threads on the new laws dealing with this matter in various ways and didn’t know where to really post it. At the same time didn’t want it to be missed by those that might be interested. I sent the following to the RFU:-...
