As we approach the start of the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England, we are going to look at what the term 'Clear & Obvious' means to a referee, and the greater team of 4 in general.

During the world cup, the match officials will be under a greater degree of scrutiny than has ever been seen before, the desire to get every decision correct is there, but perfection is something even that even the best teams have not yet achieved.

Perfection for a team would surely mean that no player drops a ball, every pass goes where intended, every tackle is made, and every kick is successful. However, as supporters we understand that this is near impossible to do over a full 80 minutes. The dynamics of the game, along with the unpredictability of the opposition defence means that mistakes will happen, but it's how you over come them that really defines the team.

I always thought that the best match report for a ref is the one where they don't mention you. However : France v South Africa , here is five minutes of NO "highlights" ... I don't think it's good refereeing to put your arm around a player. For me that's a simple power play. No doubt...

I coach a social side here in the US and am looking at a number of "Old School" moves to maybe incorporate into our playbook for next year. I wondered what would be a referee's opinion on the legality of the penalty moves shown in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Qd9w2X-Q-k Thanks

[VARSITY MATCH] Tackle in open play - player ruled offside

    Thread Starter: belladonna

I have a question about the Varsity Match last week. An entertaining game, well refereed by Nigel Owens, and won by a country mile by the better team on the day. As an alumna, I'm shouting for Cambridge but - sadly - I can't complain about the result, and have to say well played Oxford. Just...
