The recent furore over the Sam Cane v Robbie Henshaw collision in the second test between Ireland and New Zealand got me to thinking about the merits of using slow motion video to make judgements about potential foul play incidents in rugby. I think we have all heard the meme that sometimes, looking ...

Nigel Owens was born on the 18 June 1971 and raised in Mynyddcerrig; a small traditional Welsh speaking village approximately 12 miles from Carmarthen, in south west Wales. As a keen sportsman, Owens played Full Back for the school rugby team, but after missing a crucial match-winning conversion, the teacher made a tongue in cheek comment that he should consider becoming a referee. It was a half joking throw away comment which could have been instantly forgotten, but by happy coincidence it would change his life, because Owens thought to himself Why not? ...

    Are TMOs Ruining Things

    Thread Starter: Gracie

Having watched Scotland v Fiji and England v NZ, as both a referee and a fan I'm left concerned by the role of TMOs. My concern is that it the person in a studio not on the field that is making decisions on an inconsistent basis. Park my partisan head in the Scotland referrals and lets look at the...

    Nigel in action

I always thought that the best match report for a ref is the one where they don't mention you. However : France v South Africa , here is five minutes of NO "highlights" ... I don't think it's good refereeing to put your arm around a player. For me that's a simple power play. No doubt...

    Offside line at a tackle

    Thread Starter: Last_20

I have a question about the Lawes off-side call - a couple of referees from our society have been discussing today and we have found ourselves having difficulty answering a fundamental question had we been refereeing that game (we wouldn't be because we are all too old and slow, but it doesn't stop...

When is the ball out of a ruck?

    Thread Starter: OB..

Yesterday's training session was a panel-led discussion on what referees, players, coaches and assessors expect of each other. One of the thinbgs that got mentioned several times was consistency, though we found it useful to distinguish "consistency" (by a referee during a game) and...

    Guardian Article on Lawes Offside

    Thread Starter: crossref

This is a very unusual article - actually full of Law References. He even distinguishes a Ruck from a TWOL and looks at the different criteria for when it's out, as well as what it means to be offside in each case (I think possibly Paul Rees has been reading this site?) I don't think it is...
