So I have a selection game Saturday. Four 20 minute quarters.

At one point in the game we are in open play when there is a turnover ball. A Red opposition player ends up with the ball about 15 feet in front of me at my 2 o'clock position. Play is fragmented with no discernible lines.

Red player starts running straight at me.
I look to my right and left quickly, there are no players within 10 feet of me either side.
As he gets closer I take a couple of paces to my left, he seems to adjust his run toward me and is still coming straight at me.
I look around again and am completely in the open.
At this point he runs straight into me with his right shoulder down.
I twist sideways and he cannons off me.

Peep. Penalty to black.

Red player: "What for"?
Me: "You deliberately ran into me"
Red player: "You were in my way"
Me: "there was room all round me, but you decided to run straight at me. Penalty to black" Can't remember whether I said unsportsmanlike conduct, but that is what I was thinking.

I am 100% confident that he deliberately ran into me, maybe trying to use me as a shield against the opposition.

Was the penalty correct?

I'm doing some low key research into diabetes and rugby How rugby players with diabetes cope/handle their diabetes, whether it impacts their rugby or not at all etc. Rugby lifestyles and diabetes... training should help diabetes II (at least) ,... but the typical post match meal (being high in processed fat and sugars IME) and the largess of beer may not.
Diabetes I or II ... Union or League come to that! :-) Players or Refs :-)
Have you any experiences, or knowledge of such areas... anything related to diabetes and rugby... could you drop me a line? Confidentiality assured etc... PM via this site is sufficient.
A bit eoteric and theoretical this, but what happens if at a maul, the ball is being wrestled by several parties on the infield side of the maul, and:

1)most players have at least a foot in touch, but the ball itself has not crossed the plane of touch? Which foot constitute the offside line - the hind foot of all people bound in, or the hind foot only of those who are not in touch? Indeed, is there a maul at all?

2) all bar the ball carrier and one opponent have a foot in touch. Is there still a maul?

I know this is a long shot, but as Eales is a famous rugby name, I thought I would give it a go and see what pops up.
I have started to trace my wife's family history. She is an Eales by birth and although I haven't managed to find a link with the great John Eales' family yet, I have managed to trace the bloodlines back to Towcester, England. The Eales boys from Towcester were apparently shoe-makers in the early 1800s and one of them decided (of his own accord), to hop on a boat in 1856 and try his luck in Oz. A few generations down the track, I married his great-great-grand daughter

Just wondering if anyone on this forum is from around that Towcester area and if you are aware of anyone with the Eales surname? Thought that being men of rugby, the name would ring a bell.

Apologies if this is a thick question, but an incident happened in todays England v New Zealand WRWC Final game which got me thinking.

At a lineout, if one team catches the ball and a maul forms but stays stationary (ie the lineout hasn't ended) is it turnover ball, or does the attacking team get the put in?

Quote:

19.9 BEGINNING AND ENDING A LINEOUT
(b) Lineout ends. The lineout ends when the ball or a player carrying it leaves the lineout. This includes the following: ....
When a ruck or maul develops in a lineout, and all the feet of all the players in the ruck or maul move beyond the line of touch, the lineout ends. When the ball becomes unplayable in a lineout, the lineout ends. Play restarts with a scrum.

But it doesn't go on to say who gets the put in. Are we expected to apply the same rules for rucks and mauls in lineouts as we do for rucks and mauls in open play? I assume we are. :chin:

Our club's U12 team (midi) has folded due to lack of interest.

However, one of their players, want to join our U13 team. He is bigger (taller/wider) than most of the U13's, and can carry himself well on the field. There would be no obvious danger to him, and his parents are happy for him to play for us.

Does anyone know what the ruling is for this and where to find the ruling as a reference?

I heard that one year either way was allowed (with some forms signed?) but this crosses from Midi into Junior rugby, so perhaps the regulations are different for this?

Was watching South Africa vs Wallabies last night and noticed Wayne Barnes' approach to the management of the lineout. At least twice (maybe more), he pulled the lineout after the throw to get a re-throw and manage an issue that had occurred during the formation of the original line-out. The first one was at 10:20 (1st Half) when Australia had 2 receivers due to one player moving up late. Barnes blew the whistle and said something like "2 receivers, in the line please" and let the Wallabies throw in again.

It seems like there is a definite trend to managing issues with the lineout in the first instance, much the same as scrums, through a reset rather than a first up FK. Is this something everyone else has found? What sort of offences at the line-out would you give a reset rather than a FK for?
