A while ago somebody posted details from a GPS system that distinguished walking, jogging etc. A quick search failed to find it, so this is the lazy way out. Anybody?

Ask me after my first game of the season.
I have bought a Garmin watch with heart rate monitor and footpod. The footpod records running speed and distance. This is the cheaper option to the GPS version. |

We're still in season over here, I'll see if I can attach a pedometer to my kit and measure it.

We should maybe have a table and see who can run the least and still referee to a good standard, surely we will get good marks for efficency by the assessors

I used to wear a "step counter" during matches. It could be calibrated to measure distance based on the length of one's step, but lets face it - in a match your steps can vary quite a bit from some walking to all out sprints to keep up with a break-away. I'm confident that I got an accurate step count for the match, much less confident that it was measuring the distance accurately. It was several years ago, but I vaguely recall that I moved about 7000-9000 steps in a match. The shame is, one match the step counter came off and I lost it somewhere on the pitch.

I have a Garmin 305 gps forerunner and I usually end up somewhere between 3.7 and 4.2 mile per game.

The distance a ref runs is mainly irrelevant as long as he/she covers the optimum distance required (and in the arc with the best view) to ensure his positioning is such to see and/or prevent offences, and his timely arrival to see the first and not subsequent offences is paramount. Therefore it is not the distance itself (or lack of distance for the short-cut anticipators amongst us), but the ref's speed and relative position to the ball and 'active' players (but not just following the ball), along with his lines of sight are of more concern to me in my assessments. |
