Default What Advantage?

Hello Everyone,

I have a question that isn't derived from my normal Pub Chat, although I did venture out last night for a few Adnams Irish Stout; very nice indeed.

At our game yesterday (we are Team A) and the opposition is Team B.

Team A attack 5 mt out from Team B goal line and as one Team A player attempts a pass to another Team A player; a Team B player attempts to intercept the pass, the Team B player is not off-side, or from an off-side position...his intercept fails and the Team B player knocks-on.

At this moment the referee signals advantage and shouts advantage as well to Team A as a Team A Player collects the ball and passes to a Team A player who (from 5 mt out) runs in for the touch down and try. From advantage signaled to try under 4o seconds has elapsed.

The Referee then disallows the try and brings the play back to what he now says is the original offence a knock-on and therefore a scrum.

There was no foul play, no foot in touch...nothing was wrong.

Can the Referee simply reverse his decision like this; to in-effect disallow a perfectly good try.

The Referee is the Coach from Team B.

Nice sting in the tail ....

Can only that the ref thought team A infringed at some point between the knock on and scoring and perhaps he did not signal this as well as he might have. Hence he took them back for the knock on. A lot can happen in 40 seconds of play.

As you describe it, advantage was signalled and taken by team A, understand your frustration ... perhaps you should give him the benefit of doubt, that he must have seen something you didn't?

Yes. The referee is the sole judge of fact and law. The question as to whether it was a rational exercise of his almost unlimited discretion is a different one. From the way you write it up, it would be a tough decision to justify in the bar afterwards.

An irrelevance, as I'm sure you'd accept once time has dulled the immediate hurt. Did the decision affect the outcome?

Your posts suggests that "under 4o seconds" elapsed. Is that <4 seconds, or <40? If the latter, then there's quite a lot you're not telling us

Perhaps he judged one of the passes to be forward?
