Pushing is quite different to dangerous charging, and pushing is explicitly allowed.

I would agree with encouraging players to tackle, but a one man crusade against a legal manouvre may be difficult to maintain.

Stu, advice for that age group 7s is probably just be aware of the law variants in the law book.
I beg to differ.

To me what is great and enjoyable about rugby is what to do with the ball in contact with the opposition.

Sevens is all about avoiding contact. There is pretty much nothing I enjoy about it.

Yes it's good that 7s has been accepted into the olympics but I don't plan on watching it untill they play 15s.

I think this is where we split camps. For me the point of rugby is to avoid contact with the opposition and by doing this use the space to create phases of play that lead to tries. I'm a fan of 15s but the monotonous contact isn't as exciting (to me).

Saying that, only 4 days 'til reffing in Vegas so will be out sprinting up the hills and stairs tomorrow

You could argue therefore that the creation and use of space in 15s is so much more to be appreciated. My Granny - and she's dead - could use the space in 7s.

It really, really is Rugby-lite.

We'll just have to disagree. It is a variant of the 15 man game that rewards using space on the pitch to create good play. I accept the argument that one missed tackle can lead to a try but that's where a solid defense is a thing of beauty

I'm personally looking forward to next weeks reffing and watching the international 7s in Vegas

You forget, I'm a bit "Old School". I believe that the way to create space is to draw defenders into a competiton for the ball.

I do not like defenders/defenses that refuse to compete for the ball but agree that that sort of defense seems to be all the rage nowadays.

Just for clarity I was talking about a player being knocked down (as per 10.4(g), as was basharv when a couple of you told him there was nothing wrong with "pushing over".

Are you saying that a player shoved the man with the ball and this prevented a try?

Nothing wrong with that.

Law 7
Any player may tackle, hold or push an opponent holding the ball.
Yes, there may be nothing wrong with just a push, but knocking them down (even with a push) without trying to grasp them could be sanctioned under 10.4(g).
