A while ago during my search for prizes and items for auctions for the upcoming 10th anniversary of RugbyRefs.com I managed to make contact with former Test Match Referee, now iRB Referee Selector & Head of SANZAR Referees Lyndon Bray. (Pictured Left).

I wasn't very sure what I could ask/beg for from Lyndon, considering that the individual unions are in charge of their referees' kit, so I asked if he would mind answering a few questions. Lyndon replied within minutes congratulating us on the significant milestone and agreeing to answer some questions.

So then the hunt was on, I posted a thread and allowed the members to choose the top questions by way of liking the posts they thought were worthwhile. After just over a week I collated all the questions, and sent them on to Lyndon for answer.

Considering Lyndon's place on the iRB I also thought it was a great opportunity to clear up a couple of areas of law that we believed needed more clarity and Lyndon was again happy to give his opinion.

So, Without further ado, here are the questions that our members put to Lyndon, and of course, his answers:

    Question 1:
We have seen in this year's edition of Super Rugby (especially in the latter half of the season), a tendency for referees to rule that the ball is "out" of a ruck when the halfback has a hand ...

I wish I could sit back and regale you with tales of my Super Rugby and Test refereeing career, but I cannot. My career as a referee peaked some time ago, and it was more like a small hill than a soaring peak. I am not holding my breath waiting for the phone call inviting me into the Super Rugby referees Squad, but just in case Lyndon my number is in the book. These days I spend more time coaching referees than refereeing, but I am happy with that. I see my job now as helping develop the next generations of referees. Inevitably among the young guys, the question comes - So what does it take ...

So how do we all feel about Italy's "no-ruck" tactic?

    Thread Starter: Stix

After yesterday's Six Nations match between England and Italy there has been a lot of discussion about the Azzurri's constant use of the "no-ruck" tactic, which rattled England and baffled anyone without a detailed knowledge of the Laws surrounding the ruck. I've heard some, including Eddie Jones,...

well, that's it: I think I'll give up the stud inspection as I clearly have no idea what to look for - apparently WR have declared that these are legal http://www.andymcgeady.com/the-mullet-stud/

    NO WRAP = Red Card

    Thread Starter: Donk93953

Twenty minutes into first/half Under 19 game in USA. White Player is brought down with no wrap (this is subject to debate from witnesses). Contact well below waist by Blue tackler. Referee had not admonished either team for dangerous, non-wrapping or high tackles. Blue tackler awarded yellow...

    England v Italy

    Thread Starter: L'irlandais

Sounds like the Frenchman has been taking a leaf out of Nigel Owen's book "I am a referee, not a coach," says Romain Poite when James Haskell asks what he is supposed to do if Italy don't commit men to the breakdown. England looking pretty lost in the first half. Asking the ref for advice,...
