Nigel Owens was born on the 18 June 1971 and raised in Mynyddcerrig; a small traditional Welsh speaking village approximately 12 miles from Carmarthen, in south west Wales. As a keen sportsman, Owens played Full Back for the school rugby team, but after missing a crucial match-winning conversion, the teacher made a tongue in cheek comment that he should consider becoming a referee. It was a half joking throw away comment which could have been instantly forgotten, but by happy coincidence it would change his life, because Owens thought to himself “Why not?’ ...

As we approach the start of the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England, we are going to look at what the term 'Clear & Obvious' means to a referee, and the greater team of 4 in general.

During the world cup, the match officials will be under a greater degree of scrutiny than has ever been seen before, the desire to get every decision correct is there, but perfection is something even that even the best teams have not yet achieved.

Perfection for a team would surely mean that no player drops a ball, every pass goes where intended, every tackle is made, and every kick is successful. However, as supporters we understand that this is near impossible to do over a full 80 minutes. The dynamics of the game, along with the unpredictability of the opposition defence means that mistakes will happen, but it's how you over come them that really defines the team.

Maul - Ball Carrier going to ground = tackle?

    Thread Starter: Strange

Caveat - I'm pretty new to reffing. A game this weekend - Red BC gets smother tackled and a maul sets up, with 3 or 4 players from each side. BC is in contact with Blue player who is trying to rip. BC goes to ground and the ball touches the floor. Blue player starts to jackel, and claims that...

    Thread Starter: CrouchTPEngage

Just wondering, as never had much coaching on this point, how you all use your watches ? I'll explain how I use mine and see if there is a better idea out there. I have a watch on each arm (a spare in my bag ). Left wrist has hands for the time of day and a digital display stop-watch for the...

    Can this be a valid drop-goal ?

    Thread Starter: CrouchTPEngage

Quick one. Bit silly, but this one just got us talking in the pub last night. From the laws : Definition. Drop kick: The ball is dropped from the hand or hands to the ground and kicked as it rises from its first bounce. Question. Red 10 goes for a drop goal. He drops the ball from his...

    7s restart - SA v Fiji

    Thread Starter: Dickie E

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1Txyuo-IjE have a look at the restart with 2:00 mins to go in the 2nd half. What's that all about? Ball bounces once on or about touchline. How can that be a lineout to Fiji? Surely its either out on the full or play on. :holysheep:
