[Law] Re: Mark from a penalty

It was only in 1992 that the right to make a Fair Catch from a knock-on or throw forward was removed from the Laws.

I had no idea that happened so late. I started playing in 1949 and do not...

[Law] Re: Mark from a penalty

The full mnemonic I learned was "When the sound is 'ee', I before E except after C."

That knocks out most (but not all) of your counter-examples.

    [Tackle] Re: Tackle Release

Ball carrier is held but slips out of the hold and then falls over. Has he been tackled?

    Not in my book.

    [Tackle] Re: Tackle Release

That means that if a player falls on the ball, you can tackle him. Not sure that is a good idea.

[Scrum] Re: "Modern" interpretations of scrum dominance.

I remember being at Twickenham many years ago in the old South Stand on a freezing cold day. The pitch was frozen and England pushed Ireland back from 5 meters out (or was it yards?). The Irish...
  8. [Maul] Re: Puzzled by decision to disallow Ben Youngs' 'try' last Saturday..?

I think they are merely trying to avoid too much repetition.
  9. [Maul] Re: Puzzled by decision to disallow Ben Youngs' 'try' last Saturday..?

In my (limited) experience, referees with appointed ARs prefer to make that sort of call themselves unless it is blindingly obvious and they were looking the other way.
  10. [Maul] Re: Puzzled by decision to disallow Ben Youngs' 'try' last Saturday..?

Perhaps we should be checking to see if those forward passes were C&O?

    [INTERNATIONAL] Re: That haka

Do the Pacific Islanders make the same demands? I have seen footage of inter-island matches where both do their ritual at the same time. In 2006 New Zealand did the haka in their own dressing...

    [INTERNATIONAL] Re: That haka

They can do the haka if they want - personally I am now a little bored with it. However they apparently believe they have the inalienable right to do it immediately before the kick-off, regardless...

Re: Where are you this weekend - 2019-20

I am continually being told that 4G pitches do not exist. What we have are developments of the original 3G pitches.

Not that it makes any real difference.

No. Having said that are going for the posts, they MUST do so. Scrum to the opposition.

[Law] Re: Penalty Kick at Goal Rules

You seriously believe somebody would use this as a tactic?! Even if you were convinced they had done so, the law prescribes a scrum at the mark for the PK.

But they didn't carry the ball out. And since a bounce off the post into touch is a freak event that nobody would aim for, they did not kick to touch illegally. Even if they had, the sanction is a...

[Law] Re: Penalty Kick at Goal Rules

You still need to explain why the Clarification gives the throw-in to the opposition. It should either be a scrum to them at the mark for the penalty (if the kick was deemed to be invalid) or a...

Re: The new ERRA Course for Referees

Offside is different because the offside law specifically provides for a player not being penalised if he follows the requirements. There is no get out clause for a knock-on.

Re: The new ERRA Course for Referees

Only if they are so much closer as a consequence that they can impact on Green's next move - and even then they would often prefer a scrum. The referee could perhaps call Advantage.
