[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

Indeed, you have hit the nub of it. How is advantage gained ?

How is territorial advantage gained (was there none, or was there too much?)

How is tactical advantage gained ? For instance did...

[Law] Re: Place of Conversion kick

In my OP scenario it wasn't too dangerous to kick. If it was that
dangerous , I would question why you are even playing on the pitch

It was just very muddy and slippy

    He could have moved (a...

    [Law] Re: Offside at scrum

    In practice I don't think I have ever seen a 9 retire back to 5m line ...

To the back foot, often, this allows them to cover both sides of the scrum. But I can't see why they'd really want to...

[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

This is IMO in line with the Law Book. (see 12.11)
Nevertheless most refs will give a scrum

[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

What will you do if the attackers kick the ball into the in goal, knock it on, and the defenders then touch down ?

[Law] Re: Place of Conversion kick

I think moving any kick by 1 metre makes no practical difference at all

But firm ground v muddy ground makes a significant difference, both for drop kicks and place kicks

[Law] Re: KO deliberately not going 10

We judge intent all the time though.
Last week a player accidentally knocked me over. We all laughed. If I had judged it was deliberate there would have been less fun :-)

[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

There is a definition of played
    It means Intentionally Touched

(which includes charge downs and, indeed, knock ons for that matter)

A knock on is playing the ball , but you are not...

[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

Pinky, tbh i would accept that argument, which is why this discussion normally focuses on the scenario of taking the ball legally into the in goal (carry or kick) and .. then knocking it on inside...

[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

Flish 7.3.f means something else (see post 23)

But really any discussion of how tactical and territorial advantage can be gained is pretty esoteric when faced with the simple clarity of 12.11 .....

    [Law] Re: Deliberate knock forward

I think intent was pretty clear in this one

His first touch .. I would allow that, benefit of the doubt , basically trying to catch it.

His second touch .. definitely deliberate

[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

Practically speaking Phil's advice is sound .. as the assessor and the players will expect a scrum . For the scenario in the OP out on the field I also recommend a scrum.

    But Phil your reasoning...

[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

Serious note as it is important : that Law means something else : it means you can't carry on playing advantage when the ball goes dead

For example blue 11 knocks on, and then he kicks the ball...

[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

Although if the attackers send the ball into the in goal without a knock on, we see no problem at all in the defenders touching it down and getting a 22m DO ..

    Attackers effectively get rewarded...

[Law] Re: Knock on into the dead ball area.

For clarity ... If this happened in my game (a knock on from the FoP into the ingoal, where defenders touch down) I would also give a defending scrum on the 5m line .. simply because that is what...

[Law] Re: Place of Conversion kick

The try was 6m from the touchline.
Between the touchline and the 5m line the pitch was ok, but beyond the 5m line all the lineouts had created a massive mud patch. Moving forward or back didn't help...
