    Re: retaken conversion

Perhaps I should have said "superficial". Context is always important.

Moreover we all know that some similar bits of law are widely ignored eg 15.11 Once a ruck has formed, no player may handle...

    Re: retaken conversion

It's pretty clear what the Law says[/quote]You are entitled to your view, but are not entitled to claim it is the only possible one.

The point has been raised that others might take the same view...

... and if you had said "the surface reading suggests the same person should take the kick, but in practice it would seem unrealistic to insist on that" then we would not be having an argument.

Perhaps they are just being careful not to give possible cause for a libel suit.

8.22 If the kicker indicates to the referee the intent to kick at goal,(Re Penalty Kicks)

At this point "the kicker" is unidentified.

I think It is unnecessary to read the law as requiring...

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

If the receiver is in front of the passer, then I cannot see the action as unintentional. The receiver is therefore penalised for being offside.

If there is some doubt about their alignment, a...

[Golden Oldies] Re: Nigel Owens on inclusive rugby.

The legal case will turn on the legal niceties.

I agree that the public in general will not care about that, but without it we would have a sigificantly different scenario to deal with.

[Golden Oldies] Re: Nigel Owens on inclusive rugby.

The CoC is the basis on which he was fired.
  12. [Junior] Re: World Rugby U20 Championship 2019 in Argentina

Setting dates after accounting for known planned fixtures prevents a club from organising extra friendlies to get the ban over sooner (if set in terms of number of matches missed).

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

That depends crucially on your view that the original ball carrier has possession until he lets go of it. However what I see is joint possession which does not seem to be covered by current law.

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

I can see the issue very clearly: the law is not specific on this particular case.

My own view is clear - I would not whistle for it. However If I was watching a referee who did, I would not...

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

You are using your own definition of "transferring possession", which is not listed in the laws. Therefore you cannot see the problem.

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

If you hand the ball to a player in front of you, that player is clearly offside. 10.3 refers to an unintentional forward pass. Does the forward pass become intentional if you know the receiver is...

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

I think it is far more realistic than your view, which involves a player firmly & legally holding the ball becoming offside sometime afterwards

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

No - I am pointing out that the legalistic approach being used leads to an unintended confusion over offside from a forward pass.

For a normal pass the receiver will usually be behind the passer...

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

The muddle results from the fact that the laws do not deal with joint possession, so we are trying to decide what to do using laws that were never intended to cover the situation.

    You are defining...

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

What it says on the tin. More or less immediate transfer of possession.

If you say it is a forward pass then presumably the receiver is clearly offside because he is in front of the passer, but...

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

Disagree. They both had hold of the ball for some time before parting so they had joint possession.

I see it as unjustified hairspltting to call it a forward pass.

[Maul] Re: Is this a forward pass?

Pass: A player throws or hands the ball to another player.
Since both players have the ball in their grasp, it is neither thrown nor handed, therefore it is not a pass.

    [Law] Re: Offside support players
