Ingoal positioning

Today I had a game with a coach. The thing he said would be nice is positioning at ingoal. I don't seem to get into ingoal when the ball gets there.
Any tips?

What do you mean? At LO, open play, breakdown near the goal line?

Best tip to get in goal, hmm, once you have a player dive at your feet and you award the try like jonny on the spot you'll get there naturally.

At breakdowns. I tend to take up regular positioning (3-5m away and on the offensive last foot) and watch from there. This is going to be my key thing to work on seeing as how I ref for about 420 mins this weekend

It depends really how the ball gets there ie maul, run kick etc, but generally if it is T/R/M situation I normally stay on teh offensive line but as it get closer to the try line move more towards the defesnive line (whilst ensuring that I don't get in the way of the defenders) as it crosses or looks like crossing the try line I want to be about 2-3 ft inside the in goal back to the deadball line.

If there is a breakdown near in goal you can stand on the defensive side, and fail to see the ball driven over as there are 20 bodies in between you and it.

Unfortunately that also applies when you stand on the attacking side and they drive forward en masse.

If you stand mid line and far enough away to be out of the way, they will break to the opposite side, and again you will have 20 bodies to see through.

Best advice would be try to read the moves, look at 9s body position, where his runners are, or if they are going to pick and drive. Keep moving all the time so that you can respond quickly.

Don't be afraid to get down flat on the ground as the ball goes over the line, worms eye view.
