In the case where a TJ is perfectly positioned, it is unlikely the TMO will disagree. My point is that when the referee "goes upstairs" he's 95-99% assuming his AR is correct, but of course he doesn't know that the TJ was perfectly positioned for sure if he isn't even sure about the grounding most likely.

Since it is the referee who is responsible for the final call, he can hedge his bets. Without a TMO, we simply walk to the TJ and confirm that they are certain.
Hopefully Ian Smith will learn that lesson. He was unsighted when the Cheetahs cross the line near the end of the match v the Hurricanes; his AR told him that the grounding was OK, so he awarded the try.

The grounding was not OK; the player lost the ball short of the line, then regathered it and grounded it.

I wonder if the AR had been someone less experienced than Chris Pollock, would Ian Smith have gone to the TMO? Maybe he thought that CP's word was good enough. Maybe CP only saw the final position of the ball and not the half second before and sounded adament that the grounding was good? If say Andrew Lees (just an example guys) was AR, would he have been so quick to award the try? As he was completely unsighted, I thought he would definitely go upstairs for a look. Probably will from here on.

Just to divert on to what we do at League. we TJs tend to not signal and just stand close to the corner flag (our neutral position / "haven't seen the grounding") then will ask the referee to ask the VR to check the grounding and touch. If we do signal then the ref may still ask for it to be checked. The danger in signalling is if you've got it right after checking it you look great but if your wrong you can expect more than a little ribbing so you tend not to signal and just refer it

I don't think it is Smith who needs the lesson. It is Pollock. If I was ref and elite AR says "yes, definite try" I would go with that.

Exact same thing happened Friday in Leicester v Worcester game. Sir Wayne consulted AR who had got Tualagi's foot in touch but his body hid the AR's view of the grounding. TMO was able to confirm touch came before grounding from the reverse angle. No try.
Yeah but we nicked the lineout and scored anyway - and put another 5 past Worcester - so a good day really.

Fair play, Worcester didn't actually show up until the 79th minute - and what was AG thinking?
