Whether there was a realistic chance of the player catching the ball. Similar to the contact in the air scenario where we consider whether there was a realistic chance of jumping player catching the ball.

Which makes sense, judge on deliberateness not the number of hands used or not, 4 me anyway.

Whoever is telling you, seems to be ripping the page outta the guidance book before its then handed to AndyS!......Seriously though, how can interpretation be so different between Panel and L5 on a relatively straight forward issue.

    Just asking?

Oh have we got a few spare hours etc.

Because the panel know what they want, L5 'think' they know what the panel want.

So you feel assault and battery have a place on the rugby pitch?

It would be interesting report wondering why a red card for any punch would be wrong?

And this caused by the inexplicable culture in the refereeing world for distributing information via secret emails and face to face cascades. Chinese whispers in other words

We should have game management guidelines, adapted for different levels if necessary , on a website so that referees and coaches can all read them.

The reason is simple: the term "pucnh can apply to anything from a friendly hit on the shoulder to a haymaker. They are not all the same.

    That is not a punch.

If you punch anyone during a game I am refereeing, you will be sent off. If people dont like that stance they have a chance not to appoint me.

I punch someone on the thigh because he is kneeling on my chest. Red card? Seriously?

I think you need to work on your interpersonal skills if you want to make panel.
