    Default New Zealand flag redesign

As part of NZ's referendum to change its flag, they have shortlised 4 designs.

Which do you think is best?

Try this view, it helps you see them as actual flags rather than drawings

Top right for me. I would be happy with all except bottom left.

I am pro changing the flag.

What is the background to bottom left? Is it a Maori reference?

Someone asked me that in a PM a week or two ago. Here is what I wrote

    ----

The curl design is the "koru". (a Māori word meaning "loop"). Its based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond.

It symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace and is a symbol that is strongly represented in Māori art, carving and tattoos.

NZ"s National Airline, Air New Zealand has displayed a stylised "koru" on the vertical stabilisers of their airliners for many years.

various british newspapers are rather confused about the process, so it may help non New Zealanders to note that there are now going to be two referendums

    - First referendum will select one of these four as the proposed new flag.
    - Second referendum will ask new zealanders to choose between retaining the existing flag, or adopting the proposed new one.

If a new flag is chosen New Zealanders will be free to continue to fly the old one if they want, as an unofficial emblem, but all govt buildings and official usage would switch to the new flag.
