I met him once (after yet another Wales defeat) he was a gent pure and simple. None of the "percieved" South African arrogance. A delightful individual.

As Didds says "Total and utter respect".

A colleague of mine died of MND last year. He was 52. From diagnosis to death was 19 months. Terrible to watch.

Condolences to Joost's family and friends.

In an age when "great" and "legend" are bandied about without much thought, this man actually was - fantastic player and worthy RWC winner.

    God bless.

A very sad loss to the game.
He trudg’d along unknowing what he sought,
And whistled as he went, for want of thought.

A sad day for humanity when such a nice person succumbs to the horrible illness from which he suffered. Great, great player and such an engaging personality off the field.

    RIP Joost.

A very good friend of mine died of MND a couple of years ago. She was only 42; it was heartbreaking watching her deteriorate, over the last two years of her life, knowing all the time that her mind was fully aware of what was going on.

    MND is a horrible illness.

R.I.P. Joost. The suffering is over.

    Sad news indeed.
Memorable footage in a documentary from a couple of years ago when Jonah Lomu went back to SA with much about that RWC.
The meeting with Joost in that doco was powerful and moving. Genuine mutual respect between two giants of the game.

    RIP Joost.

When you are dead, you don't know that you are dead. It is difficult only for the others.
It's the same when you are stupid.
