    Default shouty lineouts

the Lions did a lot of shouting at lineouts --- here's an example, but there were others like it.

what's going on? Is he shouting to be annoying, or is there some point he's making.

#1 in the line out seems to be shouting '9 in' presumably signifying that the NZ 9 is standing #1 in the line. B

Maro Itoje also seems to be shouting something (?)

I'd agree it seems to be "9's in", but noise pollution of the lineout call was a tactic they discussed:

It's a real pet hate of mine. It's done to confuse the throwing team so as they don't hear the call, not sure what the trigger is a number of things, but to be honest at that level it's wasted. There are 80K people in there make enough noise, so a prop shouting "get it in get it in get in" etc will make little or no difference as in this case the Ab will have known what the call was from the PK.

That said on a Sat afternoon in the weeds, i'd be telling red to shut up, simples! It's just not good sportsmanship

besides isn't the entire point of the huddle to ensure everybody is on message, away from the oppo and avoiding confusion through crowd (or oppo!) noise?

I'm sad to say that this habit has crept into games at lower levels. I did a first XV school game last weekend and at the first lineout the defending team starting calling out random numbers at the top of their voices. First time I've ever experienced it at any level - including when running touch at prem games.

I had to step in to tell them to cut it out. Fortunately it was not repeated at any other lineouts so at least they listened to me.

I think as referees we should stamp this out before it becomes a thing. If it has become a thing in the NH then I say a concerted effort is needed by refs at all levels to cut it out.
