    Default Calling for a pass from the other team?

    I haven't found anything on this after a quick search online and in the law book, so I'll ask the experts. If the opposition breaks through the line and I'm chasing after the ball carrier in open field play, can I call for the ball -- pretending to be his teammate/support runner? I saw it happen in a game and was discussing it afterwards. Some thought it was illegal; some thought it was perfectly fine; some thought it was legal but bad form.

    What's the verdict?

    I'd say you are leaving yourself open to "acts contrary to good sportsmanship" etc and a PK. Possibly a YC also. And very possibly if you are the only defender that might nail him, a PT under "beam me up scotty" approaches.

    On the other side of the fence i think it's legal but frowned upon.
    If you do it i expect you to get away with it, but you shouldn't be disappointed if you don't receive universal approval from your team mates

    If they're stupid enough to pass it to you then they deserve all they get, IMHO.

    @didds I wondered the same thing about the sportsmanship rule possibly applying here. I suppose it's ultimately one of those things that it's up to the ref's interpretation of the laws.

    @crossed Yes, and the other team, too. I suppose one might end up with a black eye from the bottom of a ruck after attempting this.

    @Beckett50 it didn't work, so I guess it's a moot point anyway.

    If one of my backs fell for that, I'd have to be held back. Don't give it if you can't see him.

    Play on all day. Rugby involves a certain amount of deception, and if the other team falls for it, so be it.

    Would you penalize a ball carrier because he fakes a pass that the defender falls for, leading to a line break?

    Play on, and pay more attention next time.

    It deserves about as much respect as calling out to disrupt the opposition line out calls.

    One for the referee to manage, not penalise in the first instance.
