doesn't that encourage sides in possession to wheel to run the clock down as they won't lose possession?

I like the law that sees a kick over the dead ball line go back for a scrum. This has prevented endless pointless kicks and punishes poor skill.

I also like the recent change to allow quick throws to be thrown back as well as straight. This makes QT's a much more realistic and viable option in a lot of cases.

You picked the two worst changes ever. Followed closely by 16.6d.

And when the law was changed flankers were known as wing forward. Now they are correctly called flankers because they have to stay flanked. Come to think of it, if you want a wider game, make the pitch wider or just eliminate the #6 and #7. that will open it up.

Another dud is offside line at 5m for scrum.
As an even older fart, I would be interested in your reasoning, since I disagree with you. (I assume you meant 16.5 (d))

I've never seen that happen although I can see that it might. Pros outweigh the cons IMO
I, for one, like Roman numerals

Well you haven't seen that happen because it wold be a turnover, so hardly a good idea for the side in possession to do so!

Ah, yes, wheeling. Limiting the wheel to 90 was a plus but making it a turnover was not. Now that it is not a turnover I'd like to see wheeling return to the game as a tactical skill. It's like farmland, once lost it's lost forever.

Law 19.1 (a) No gain in ground

Bringing the ball back to the point of the kick was an improvement but

Law 19.1 (b), (c) and (d) Taking the ball back into the 22

are complications that really have little real impact.

I think I agree with that - I am thinking of the defending lineout or scrum just outside the 22m, and the defenders have set up a tedious tackle/ruck before they can kick for touch. that doesn't help keep the game moving

My drinking friends and I discussed this in the pub last evening. All rugby people who have played at highish levels, two still playing level 6 in England. While agreeing that some of the laws improved the game, line-out lifting, having the throw following a penalty kick to touch etc. The reaction when Insuggested law changes were to allow the ball in play longer were ones of disgust. The collective opinion was that The RFU did not understand the rugby was a players game not a spectators game. Most lower level players found in hard enough to play 80 mins as it was without lengthening the time the ball was in play! I was asked if any of the RFU laws committee actually still played the game at community level. A question I could not answer. Does anybody know why the ball needs to be in play more?

It needs to be in play in the TV game, otherwise it's a bit boring to watch
