If 2 players are going for the ball, isn't it almost inevitable that their arms will lock?

"Almost". The referee might well have decided it was not inevitable in this case.
He trudg’d along unknowing what he sought,
And whistled as he went, for want of thought.

For me the initial challenge was good.
Both players jumping, both players with eyes on the ball.

But having lost the contest for the ball the Argentine player then hooks Browns arm, which is what pulls him off balance and onto his face. So following the protocol it should have been a

    So they copped out then?

Or just got the protocols entirely wrong, between a team of 4 proffesionals?

there was no discussion between a team of four professionals was there, MW watched the video play on the big screen and announced his decision; then ... after a pause ... the TMO agreed

I definitely think he got that wrong.
    - I can understand how someone could watch that and say 'no offence'
    - having read the thread, I can understand how someone could watch that and say RC

but I can't see how he got to YC

He changes his running line to nudge/chip white 15, and extends his elbow as W15 is about to jump, keeping him from getting to the height he would need to be at to make it a "fair challenge".
The split second i saw that i got the feeling it would end up in tears for us. It happens all the time and never gets penalized.

agree with the YC bit and your synopsis above.

WRT the team of 4's input... I can't find a video of the full match etc but didn't the ref chat with a AR whilst watching the screen? I guess if a AR had chatted to him or spoke to him overt comms to say "Errr...." he could have overruled them naturally.
