Default on the ground in the in goal .. or not ...

Here's an interesting on from Wasps v Leicester !

White 11 is tackled very close to the goal line, he starts to reach to score, and black 9 slides to the ground in the in goal, and strips the ball from him

So I reckon the options are

1 - B9 went to ground at the tackle and played the ball - PK White + YC + PT
2 - B9 was in the in-goal and in the in goal there are no tackles, and therefore no prohibition on going off feet - Play on
3 - Yes but although B9 was in the in goal, W11 - and the ball - was in the FoP ! so .... help !

Before you watch it, what do you think the ref decided - was he right

I haven't watched the video however I would expect most refs to go with option 2. While the ball is technically in FoP, there is no other way for the defenders to prevent a try. Equity and all that.

I'd go with 2, as in-goal is all about grounding/not grounding; many laws stop at the tryline, like ruck, tackle, maul, scrum, scrum offside. It wasn't a dangerous play.

Interesting. I immediately went for 2 also. Nothing wrong with that in practice I thought. Yes, it is going to ground but you would not call it, would you?
    However, checking the LotG:

22.4 OTHER WAYS TO SCORE A TRY
    (e) Tackled near the goal line. If a player is tackled near to the opponents’ goal line so that this player can immediately reach out and ground the ball on or over the goal line, a try is scored.
    (f) In this situation, defending players who are on their feet may legally prevent the try by pulling the ball from the tackled player’s hands or arms, but must not kick the ball.
In bold above "players who are on their feet" may legally prevent the try. So penalty for going to ground at the tackle plus handling on the ground.

I will check the video now...

Having seen the video I think it was excellent defending and no way would I have penalised Black 9.

I saw this incident and didn't think there was anything wrong.

Maybe you could make an argument for a penalty on a technicality, but in my view it's the same as a player trying to hold up the BC when the ball hasn't quite crossed the goal line - technically you could give a penalty, but you shouldn't.

I went for 2 initially. Then watched the video and, thank God, I've never had to make a decision like that !
It would be a hard-sell to award a penalty try there. It looked as thought the ball-carrier/tackled-player didnt look after the ball very well. Fair enough, he's allowed to reach out and try to score, but the defence needs some reward for stopping him so short such that there is increased jeopardy should he attempt to this "reach-out"
"Play on" was the right decision for me.

    Watched video .
Couple things i thought was very obvious to see .

Black team are off side at ruck by at least half meter ( penalty advantage )
Black tackler i think 14 ,,hasnt released ball carrier & he is on wrong side ( new penalty advantage )
Black deffender nr 9 off feet in field of play & also not allowing tackled player to re set ball .

Penalty try & take your pick who you give yellow card to .

At full speed I would have played on, nothing clear and obvious. In TMO mode with super slow motion replay- defender off feet -ball in field of play PK/PT/YC all day long. Was he asked?

Option 3 for me, ball still in FOP so players must be on their feet to play the ball. What if a defender is off their feet with just his feet in-goal reaching out and playing the ball that's 2-3 metres from the goal line, would he expect to be penalised?
