am merely proviing a simpler example as a test case - where there is only one variable ie the chasing attacking kicker with the static receiving defender. At the moment the law favours the chasing poor kicker (poor because he has kicked it straight at an opponent). over the static defender who is merely waiting for the ball that has been kicked to him. And the best these "simplified" laws maybe suggest is that rather than knowing he just has to run away form the landing point, the defender can now make a judgment call on what the ref's judgment call may be if he stays there and is clattered by the sprawling chaser (that kicked the ball straight at him!). And in the knowledge that if he makes his own judgment call wrong it is potentially 3 points to the opposition and a minimum of a yellow card.

I suggest we should not use a simplified situation to decide the general principle when it does not cover the most common situation.

Which is why this book should have been seen earlier by referees. Those poor beggers that have to make sense of it all!

WADR I'd suggest that if we cannot come to a common solution to a simple example, what chance to do we have to cover a more dynamic one?

Yes , I am sure that in practice it would throw up some incidents that seem unfair . .. but nevertheless I'd really like to see it trialled as it at first sight it's an attractive idea ..

If the simple example is untypical, it does not help if the points of difference are crucial. I think they are in this case.

well, we seem to debate a lot of "what if" untypical scenarios here ...

Debating "what if" cases around a particular consensus is the reverse of trying to use a less common occurrence as the basis for a general agreement. It is essential to start with the commonest scenarios.
