Post Re: Trouble at Los Millos

    Official communication:
Further to the game between Belgium and Spain, played in Brussels today, Rugby Europe would like to precise that Rugby Europe has always operated the highest standards of match official selection whatever the competitions. Our structures have provided a pathway for some of the world’s top officials.

As for other international major competitions, referees’ appointments for Rugby Europe Championship have been made ahead of the competition by an independent and neutral skilled committee (any Rugby Europe board members involved) . It has been reviewed and confirmed during the tournament based on referees’ performance at international level.

While we appreciate that this is a subject of high-emotion, it would be inappropriate to comment on match official performance before the usual full review has been undertaken.

This is usual procedure and occurs for every match.”

Kinda ironic the Spanish players accused the referee, while themselves behaving in a way which no self respecting National Rugby team would ever do. Here’s hoping they don’t make it to the World Cup after that disgraceful display.

"It seems Spain might have requested a change of refs before today's game".
Seems to me as if they came into the game with it already in their head that the referee would be against them, so got worked up over what players would normally let go as 50/50 calls.

but let's face it - you know going in to the game that if Spain lose Romania qualify for the RWC ... and they appoint a Romanian referee ?

That's a poor appointment in my view.

Spain's behaviour on the pitch was disgusting, I hope they get a hefty punishment.

Appointing a Romanian team of 3 for this game was utter madness. Even if the appointments were made a while ago, they should have been revised based in how surprising a number of results were in this years ENC1.

Both parties come out of this debacle looking rubbish.

My understanding was that referees in the ENC structure can only be appointed from to a division lower than the one in which your federation plays. So Romanian or Portuguese or German officials etc can referee everything from ENC Trophy and below, not in the same division as the one in which their country plays. In games in the Netherlands I've seen officials from Portugal, Germany, Scotland and Italy but not from Poland or Moldova etc.

Having said that, I know that a team of 3 from the Netherlands went to officiate a Georgia v Romania game in the past though!

Why didn’t they appoint some French officials? Or from some other neutral nation.

That said, it looks like Spain failed to deal with the weather conditions and needed someone to blame.
Spain, ranked 19th in the world, were overwhelming favourites to beat 25th-ranked Belgium on Sunday.

But on a muddy pitch worsened by overnight snow they failed to get up to full speed and their players...

Obviously, Spain's behaviour is completely unacceptable.

A friend-of-a-friend was watching and said that even as a Belgian supporter there were some surprising decisions against the Spanish. I find it hard to believe that a high-level referee would risk their career on a favourable result for their own club/country, but it's also baffling that the appointments weren't revised, and that the team of three accepted the appointments.

Interesting, I hope the referee just had a car crash of a game, rather than any biais.

As an aside, there were some awful decisions at the Rio Olympics boxing. Some of these were pretty blatant examples of corruption, yet the powers have brushed it under the carpet. In the case of the Irish boxer, the Russian coach came into their dressing room before the fight with a veiled warning the fight had been fixed.
