Default 10 Metres back from the mark or where the kick at goal is taken?

Fairly straightforward one from playing this weekend.

Referee awarded the Red team a penalty about 10 metres out from the tryline and mid way between touch and the posts. The Red team opted to kick for goal, to improve the kicking angle the kicker brought the tee back approx 10 metres back from the original mark. The referee told the Black team that they must stand 10 metres back from the original mark not from where the kicker is taking the kick (therefore meaning that there was 20 metre gap between defenders and kicker and in this instance the defending team had to stay behind the try line for the kick at goal (as this was 10 metres back from the original mark). This prevented the Black team from standing in a position to field a rebound off the posts.

Genuinely not sure what the right call is? Any clarity would be great as the Laws online do not offer specific clarity. Where can players and refs seek answers to finer question apart from on these forums which would not be admissible in a court of law (as it were).

    Go well...cheers

    The referee was spot on.
Defenders must stand 10m back from the mark, not from where its kicked.

As for this preventing them from being in a position to catch a rebound??????
Why? as soon as its kicked they can run forward.
It's the same for the attacking team who must be behind the kicker until he kicks it.

Consider a PK 10m dead in front of the posts. The kicker will take the goal attempt from the mark. Defenders are behind the try line of course.

They aren't in a position to catch any rebound from there either!

(and PhilE has it spot on)
