    Default Inadvertent touch down

Kick chase towards saints goal line line, saints defender goes to ground, takes possession and slides into in goal (if this were an attacking player we would be happy that it was grounded and award a try), however within the same movement he jumps to his feet, still in possession, and plays the ball, obviously wanting to play it out and avoid the 5m scrum to wasps as the defender had taken the ball over.

Now, in the next few phases Saints keep trying to play it out, cock it up, and Wasps ground it for a try. Now, do we award the try (as happened here), because the players actions were such that grounding the ball was not the defenders intention, or disallow and go back for the scrum as technically saints grounded it in goal even if they didn’t intend to.

I think I would play on and give they try, defenders made their decision and got it wrong.

    Default Inadvertent touch down

Red defender chasing back after loose ball , dives on the ball, slides over his own goal line (ball touching ground) gets to his feet and counter attacks

    Play on ?
Or has he inadvertently touched it down for a 5m scrum , even though he didn't want to ?

Jinx! You beat me to it (mods feel free to merge / delete my post).

Try for me, didn’t intend to touch it down, made a decision, got it wrong.

What would we do if an attacker inadvertently touched it down even though he didn't want to?

I think we would all give the Try at the first grounding; it seems only fair that we apply the same logic to the defender.

I had the same thought, but struggling to imagine the scenario, possibly slid over wide but needed 7 points so jumped up and then ran around to go under the posts (and fluffed it)? In that case, I think, same, made a decision, chose to play it, and cocked it up, hard luck

In the case of the defender: I'd have to be empathetic to the situation. In an uncontested situation I'd have to assume the intent is to pick up the ball and call it as such.

If an attacker slid in then that intent is not so clear.

Default Re: Intention to ground the ball Wasps vs Saints

I would refree it as outlined ie not initially grounded but played similar to a defender picking up the ball and opting to play or an attacker picking up to touch it down in a better position.

I agree. Watched the match live and - even on the replay - was convinced that Reinach hadn't grounded the ball. Once again Mr Healey is talking rubbish.

Reinach's hand was under the ball as he slid over the line, and this was C&O in the replays
