Question Interested in becoming a referee

    Hi folks,

As the title says I'm interested in getting involved in reffing. A little background: I'm 26, Irish, recently moved to the UK. Played all through underage at a fairly high level towards the end and then played senior rugby on and off between injuries. I was considering returning to play in the UK but I'm not sure I will be able to sustain it, so thought refereeing might give me the satisfaction and involvement I'm looking for.

I've looked into the requirements and am keen to complete the England Rugby Refereeing Award, from what I've seen this seems to be the first step. Is joining a refereeing society the next step then in getting involved in officiating matches?

Thanks in advance, any advice would be much appreciated!

I believe the short answer is yes.
Where abouts are you - that will let someone tell you about the society meetings?

You could always play and ref. I'm planning to do this next year. Play on the Sat and ref the youths on Sundays, the weeks I don't have match I'll put my availability for the men's matches. Lower divisions. You're still pretty young (I'm 40 lol) and our captain this year was 52ish. Just an idea.

    Hi

    Welcome to the forum.

Yes the first thing you need to do is complete a referees course.
A list of courses and dates can be found here: https://www.englandrugby.com/my-rugb...d=&c=&eventid=
There is a Refereeing Children course and then a 15 a side game course (level 2). I suspect this is the one you need.
All courses need to be booked through this system. If you join a club, often they will pay for the course for you.

Once you have completed the course you can join your local Referees Society to be appointed to games and get feedback and development. If you are still playing then your Society will happily fit appointments in around your playing. You don't have to commit to being available to referee every weekend.

If you let us know where you are planning to live, someone on here will know contacts for the local Society.

    Good luck.

I strongly recommend that you join your local referees society then let them train and guide you, We have a specialist mentor for novice referees, for example.

If you want to play occasionally, I'm sure referee training will help you in that as well.

In London you would be able to join now and then do the course. You will receive a warm welcome

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm in Hertfordshire, contacted the local society and they seem to be very welcoming, but I need to get the level 2 award complete, that's my next step. Unfortunately, the next one I'm available to attend/is nearby isn't until June, so will have to wait until then to get my reffing career off the ground!

Never mind. There's always exchanges to Yorkshire to look forward to. All the best with the refereeing. Enjoy it.
