Not sure the English flag has anything to do with the take up of a sport by any demographic? Do the Stars and Stripes stop any group from getting involved in sport? Does any countries flag have that effect on a minority in their country? There are of course many Asian kids both immigrant and born in England, playing cricket in England where the English flag is just as often worn and displayed at the various cricket grounds.

Would it surprise you to learn that I was fan of The Caped Crusader (Batman) before I ever heard of "The Crusades". I was a Batman fan from a single digit age... I didn't learn about "The Crusades" until my sixth form year. For me, the term "Crusader" was always synonymous with Batman... until about 1996.

Ah, that was before I asked the question
So the counter example is an obscure NGO in Liberia?

I don't call for Canterbury to be banned, or even forced to change their name .
I call on them to consider the issues and to decide to change their name (which I am sure they will in 2021)

In other words, usage is NOT necessarily religious.

I doubt if the average Canterbury Crusaders fan sees the name as anything more than medieval pageantry.
He trudg’d along unknowing what he sought,
And whistled as he went, for want of thought.

Quite possibly.. and now that they are more woke, naturally they will call for the name to change

In terms of organised Groups that call themselves Crusaders, seemingly oblivious of the connotations of religiously motivated warfare, we have found just one so far, (that Liberian NGO)

earthquakes, mass shootings, self-flagelation ... I'm glad I don't live in Christchurch. Is the wizard still around?
