The infamous "forward pass" thread, but we could fix that though.

If a mod were to delete all the posts arguing that a pass was forward if it travelled forward over the ground (i.e. the ones that were wrong) it could be reduced to a single page, and there would only be a half a dozen members' post in there.

A mere 1248 replies. Both «*Where are you this weekend ?*» threads are more. 1264 and 1261 replies respectfully. I wonder how many were in Ian’s forward pass discussion. The notion of the momentum pass certainly wasn’t spoken of when I was a lad. So one could certainly forgive folks for thinking that «*toward the opponent’s deadballline*» meant just that. The past is a foreign country they do things differently there.

"Ruling the momentum pass since 1948"

Well, not me personally. I was coached about momentum passes when I first started refereeing, that was in the late 1970s!

Like I said, I never heard of it while playing. Possibly a Southern Hemisphere thing. Certainly that Aussie video explaning it is the first mention I had of such a ruling. As far as I know, it still is NOT written in the Laws.

OB’s.. Historical footnote on that 1948 ruling, got all of 34 replies (half of those from chopper).
    Also worth pointing out that
Royds, Admiral Sir Percy – The History of the Laws of Rugby Football. Walker & Co. 1949
is out of print, so not easy to get hold of a copy for explaining the decision after the game. Especially since no french translation has ever existed, to my uncertain knowledge.
It’d be so much easier if WR took the trouble to do what iRB never did and write in into the LoTG

This one from gillburt suggests I not the only one who discovered something on RRF

    Definitions
Throw forward: When a player throws or passes the ball forward i.e. if the arms of the player passing the ball move forward.

I agree it is not crystal clear that "forward" is judged relative to the player.
He trudg’d along unknowing what he sought,
And whistled as he went, for want of thought.

    It's a silly definition.
I can pop pass a ball using my wrists alone, ie without moving my arms.. .. it could go forward. It would be a forward pass .

back to the topic --- update on Billy Vunipola and his tweeting.

BV is in the position that Folau was before he made his infamous post : he has received a formal warning.

Interestingly, though, the post that occasioned the warning is still up. Implying they reached some sort of cease-fire, rather than a surrender.
