My point was more that in RL a tap of the ball on the foot is "correctly taken", the ball doesnt have to be kicked, unlike in RU

This is probably for exactly the reason you highlight: being forced to relinquish possession is much too harsh, when it's the other team who just committed the PK offence)

you are inventing a sanction and then complaining that it's too harsh

How do we know there is no sanction ?
1- no sanction stated in Law 20
2- no "scrum following incorrectly taken PK" in law 19 (cf - it does by comparison list scrum for incorrectly taken re-start kick..)
But surely the rewrite didnt change any Laws

only convincing if you write in caps, in red and in a really big font.

Ok, so the law now has no sanction for an incorrectly taken PK. What is the hive mind treatment here? Allow a retake or scrum to oppo?

Retake. For some types of incorrectly taken (eg from the wrong place) it's always been a retake

If they haven't taken the PK properly then they haven't yet taken the PK

And yet for a restart, a 22DO, or a conversion if they haven't taken the kick properly then they have taken the kick and get sanctioned/lose the opportunity.

The difference is that when it's a PK the other team have just committed a PK offence... So we really want that offence to be punished

And yet nowhere else in the game do we protect players from their own technical inability without sanction. We could also call it back and have it taken as a FK, for example, and go from FK to scrum against.

(to be clear - I agree with your answer to Zebra1922, retake is correct in law)

Well, we can only speculate about why the law is as it is

I think a closer analogy would be if they attempted a restart but missed the ball completely. In which case, I would allow a retake.
