If WR told the refs to manage this properly then they'd do so without the need for gadgets.

Nic Berry could have made a mark with his bottle of spray tan he carries with him.

Where I've noticed it I've asked players to take it from the mark. Happens with kicks to touch but where it's really taking the piss I'll mention it.

Never had to up the ante and make anyone kick again.

Where there is a TMO I think the TMO should monitor for this

Where there is no TMO, perhaps some spray might sometimes be useful. Especially if you are pausing for a moment to talk to someone or tend an injury, then you could mark the spot , just like refs used to do much more with their boot in the good old days.

This one of Barrett's: I'm torn between admiring the audacity, fuming at the obvious cheating and wondering why the ref turned his back and lost the mark. To my mind he should have either taken Read's question where he was or made a mental scan of the mark - the proximity to the line should have helped him.

With my Society Vice-Chair hat on...

Vanishing foam is between £3.60 and £5.99 a tin depending on where you buy it from and how many you order.
    Add on postage.
Add on £4 for a holster to keep it in.

Multiply that for the number of active referees in a Society x Games covered each week.

At a time when Society budgets are being hit hard and funding is slowing down from the RFU who have their own budgetary problems I see this as an unnecessary expense that we can manage without.
