But the fact it HE was selected for the honour and good luck to him.
Kaplan knew, he even wrote an article in the Telegraph in early October

Rugby World Cup 2019 referees guide, by Jonathan Kaplan: 'Nigel Owens is best referee of his generation but Jerome Garces will get the final'

Yes he was selected as you say but that is not the point of this discussion, it was his actions after the game which I and others queried

Kaplan opinion which proved right. Totally different to "knew".

Howeve, The point is it was a massive honour (deserved or not). I ,for one, am not going to be churlish enough to piss on his chips. I'll leave that to others.

I'm unfamiliar with the vulgar "piss on his chips" but if it means to suggest that the ref act with a bit of dignity & decorum & not make the event all about him to the point of drawing boos from the crowd ... then my fly is being lowered

In my opinion it wouldn’t take much to get boos out of England supporters after a loss of that magnitude.
All serves to deflect attention away from England players’ slight on the award ceremony.

First elbowgate, then medalgate .. it's referees behaving badly !

I think the two events are similar : ill-advised but hardly shooting offences

Same for the England players, yes they should have worn the medals, but it wasn't the worst offence in the world to feel ashamed of them

None of it is shooting offences. It's how you want history to remember you.

I don't know why they give runner up medals on the day. Its a no win. If the losing team look miserable they are bad losers, if they don't look miserable they don't care.

The AFL (Aussie Rules) stopped giving runners up medals on Grand Final day years ago (about 1981) after players threw them away into the crowd.
