I should be clear: I'm not justifying it, I'm only saying there's a reason that it's tolerated where it wouldn't be if the roles were reversed - I think its days are numbered.

This doesn't personally bother me in the slightest, though, and until I hear of someone who is bothered or feels they can't complain about it I'll not militate for change. Jokes are absolutely not a defence for bullying or intimidation.

Getting back on topic, I never have walked through the tunnel, have been invited to on a few occasions but politely declined.

I blow full time and will step back from the usual handshake line that forms, if someone wants to shake my hand happy days if they dont thats fine too.

Then if I can ill stand to one side of the tunnel and clap the teams off.

Does that risk giving the impression you don't want to shake hands ?

Just a little anecdote. My first ever senior match. I didn’t think it went that well. Was sure I’d missed a lot. Blew for full time and went walk about to retrieve my TJ flags that had been discarded on opposite sides of the pitch. I was a long way from the players when I heard from a distance “Sir, hurry up and through the tunnel please” - both teams waiting for me. I have to say, it made me feel much better about the match I’d just had and, with a lot more experience now, it seems to be relatively common round here that the ref goes through.

As a player never miss a tunnel. As a ref, I'll shake hands with all players who want to shake mine. But in my massive experience (sarcasm) in my 3 matches (U-16, Midland Cali reg Div 2 and Ladies Nat 1) all in SRU land for those who don't know - I've not went into the tunnel. In the last 3 years in about 25 ish games I've played, I've not seen the refs go through the tunnel. While I wouldn't object if one did, I'd think it was strange.

    Id hope not.

I stand close enough to the line that its only a few steps to shake my hand, but not a blatant snub if you dont.

During my playing days (youth in Scotland and England, club in England and Northern Ireland, plus the armed forces) I recall the referee coming through the tunnel routinely and I recall clapping and thanking the ref regardless of how I viewed his performance.

Refereeing in the Army I always went through the tunnel but since returning to Scotland and civi life 10 years ago I have not gone through. It is not routine here.

Having been off for a couple of weeks through injury I got a call on Friday to cover a friendly arranged at the last minute between two good second teams. The conditions were terrible...very wet, windy and cold. The game was played in great spirits and with a lot of humour. At the end the players formed lines as usual to shake hand and I stood to the side and clapped, as usual. All players then came and shook my hand. A gnarly second row from the away team informed me “you’ll be Coming through the tunnel with us ref”, it wasn’t a request! As I walked through I then got “three cheers for the ref” from the home team as I walked through.

I don’t think that there is any point that I am making here other than to share an experience that I found to be really uplifting. We all have games were we are criticised and used by coaches to excuse the team’s performance, then have to drive home feeling flat and wondering why we bother. Sometimes we have an experience like I did yesterday and remember why we love the game so much.
    Keep smiling!

There is a club in the Portsmouth area who have a beer mug set aside for the referee, and the beer was (is?) free.
