It was an honest question, politely asked by a new poster. A polite answer surely would have sufficed. Norman I hope you stay around and contribute to the site and hopefully we can all broaden our knowledge.

Or come to this forum and ask for clarification....which hopefully they will get!

Edit. .. Without being made feel bad for asking!

As this is a Referee site, I'd expect a basic knowledge of the laws.

Th ref in the OP could make it clear, to the players with a shout of "Pass went backwards play on". In your scenario similarly "Off the chest, no knock on!"

This isn’t a refs’ site surely it’s a site about referring?

The OP is not a referee.

In my scenario I did indeed, as you suggest, call "play on...no knock on ".

However this doesn't change the fact that the majority of those present thought it was a knock on.

Did it pass between his hands as he tried to catch it? Or were his arms spread wide ?

Hands spread wide waiting for ball to pop up but it 'popped' sooner and faster than expected.

Player juggling to control a pass who 'slaps/bats' the ball backwards....
Ball doesn’t go forward but we ( IRFUland and presumably other regions ) are told to call a knock on.

If, when juggling the ball, he loses control and the ball goes forwards I can see why it should be called a knock-on. However if while juggling he loses the ball backwards, I cannot see that as a knock-on.
He trudg’d along unknowing what he sought,
And whistled as he went, for want of thought.
