The referee can always ask the player what he intends to do.
He trudg’d along unknowing what he sought,
And whistled as he went, for want of thought.

I am not quite sure why we would ever do this ?
If one team is lining up a (legal) surprise play, why would the ref spoil it for them ?

It's not necessarily spoiling it...it may be just to facilitate it same as when a team come to you before a game and give you the details of a 'move' they're planning on using to ensure you're not caught off guard or getting in the way!!

For a kick at goal, the referee needs the TJs to be behind the posts.

As a referee, you can't involve yourself in such a deception, otherwise the aggrieved side will have a rightful gripe.

Don't agree . For instance if they are short of time and want to drop kick quicky ..

If he attempted the kick at posts, but accidentally hooked it badly, so with the same outcome. Would you allow the try to stand ?

The referee does not hold up play, but if the kicker is gong to place kick for the posts, then the referee gets the TJs behind them.

    The law before 2000 included:
27 note (vi) If the kicker appears to be about to take a kick at goal, the referee may ask him to state his intention.

Presumably they thought it was too obvious to need stating.

I am still not sure in what circumstances a referee would ever ask ?
