All I can picture is a Windsor Davies lookalike in ref kit shouting "Come here Evans, not you Evans, I want Evans"

If it gets too big a mouthful, then they usually have a shortened version eg Carmarthen Athletic just gets shortened to "Athletic" Llanelli Wanderers gets shortened to "Wanderers" etc. If it's more than 3 syllables it's probably easier to stick to the colours, but I think team names are useful where possible. Players names? Even if I thought it was a good idea, my memory isn't that good.
I played against Clwb Rygbi Cymry Caerdydd back in 2016 when the Golden Oldies world cup was on in Cardiff - great lads

If you add in Williams and Davies I'm pretty sure you'd cover at least 75% of teams.

If it's more than 1 syllable I will stick to colours!

the only team here that I use team name is Quins because of their multi coloured kit.

I also avoid multi-syllable colours (orange, purple, maroon, gamboge, malachite, etc).
I, for one, like Roman numerals

And ‘roll away baby poo’ could create some awkward discussions in the bar later.

I think best practice is to use colours .. it's more reliable, you can't forget a colour, and colour words are much more succinct than team names.
