Eng U20 v Wal U20 - tackle in the air ?

red player carries then kicks ahead - but his body action in the kick leads him to effectively jump into the white defender, who subsequently gets PKd for playing red in the air.

Game clock at 34:03

I can see why its playing in the air. I'm just seeking any clarification as to why that wasn't jumping into white/dangerous play by red, or just treated as a rugby incident given red had in effect created the situation?

cheers

Maybe the ref felt white had enough time to adjust or could have brought them down with less impact? And white didn’t do himself any favors by driving down (or looking like he did) as he completed the tackle.

I think if he’d made an attempt to soften the landing, or just let red flip over it would have been play on, but the action doesn’t look good.

That said, the current laws and practice give way too much leeway to the jumper, even when they cause the problem, so was always going to be a crapshoot.

If he'd have kept hold of him it would have been play on for me but he throws him and lets go so penalty is the right decision.

So merely for clarity, you guys see no issue with red's actions in jumping into white?

And if instead of kicking red had held onto the ball, the same outcomes?

On, I have plenty of issues with the way a jumping player can launch into opposing players. Unfortunately, the Laws give them a lot of latitude.

Fair comment VS...

My question was poorly phrased :)
Lets try ...

So merely for clarity, you guys feel your whistle is tied [ notwithstanding your own potential disquiet etc. ], with red's actions in jumping into white?

And if instead of kicking red had held onto the ball, the same outcomes?

As it stands I wouldn’t pull red up for that jump as a) it’s not that crazy a jump given the kick action (and a long way from my personal pet hate where I see a defender run back ready to catch or maybe take a mark only for an attacker to come screaming in and launching knee up “to compete”), and b) if white had just held red or it was just the jumper’s momentum that flipped him over I’d have played on. The jumper created the situation.

The problem was white’s actions after the tackle - grabbed, turned, and pushed red down - made it look worse than it was.

If red hadn’t kicked the ball then it’s a much different situation, I now have a player jumping to avoid a tackle and that’s at least a PK, maybe more depending on how they collide with the defender.

the dilemma fully understood.

But then had red not kicked but held the ball throughout, then white's post tackle/contact actions ("grabbed, turned, and pushed red down ") would have been irrelevant then for you? and it would have been PK to white?
