Ireland vs South Africa - penalty try.

When both sides seemed so intent on trying to cheat and get away with whatever they could, Mr Carley had a very difficult job but I do feel he set himself up from the outset with a poor call on Green 10 and it got worse.

That's a strong statement. Humour me with more details on the SA cheating that you're looking at.

Bear in mind Mr Carley was probably trying very hard not to ping anything but 10 defensive penalties screams of a team murdering any fast gain line possession.

@shebeen

You asked.

I posted.

Obviously not humoured!
Posting the game stat was hardly answering it. There is nothing I could say that could convince you, so here's someone to assist.

Three irish pundits commenting on the game, so it has context and their angle.
You don't have to listen to it, but trust me that their view is totally different to yours.

They quoted 28 penalties from Ireland (many multiple), and the opinion is that MC seemingly wanted to even things up in the end with some late penalties and a very soft card (yes, they honestly said that).

So both teams cheating? Not according to these fellas?

Just to remind you of my first comment:

You prompted:

So I offered SA penalty stats! They are what they are!

Now you want to broaden the discussion rather than comment upon the focus you wanted to put on it.

But anyway to "humour" you again.

The review offers comment against the game but you also need to consider they are dissecting the Irish performance so their focus will be on Irish penalties.

Rather than trying to pick one bit out:

- I Interesting take that they appear initially to feel the "group" is a fixed entity. Teams never are, there are so many moving and changing elements both within the team and from the opposition, eg Australia second half comeback and the second test.
- They later considered that "tinkering" with coaches might be necessary.
- Ireland were dominated across the confrontational aspects.
- The commenters assessed the display as shambolic hence I would also offer that Ireland were unable to apply any rugby nous to control the game.
- There is a general acceptance on here and elsewhere that defensive foul play is pinged, whereas going forward and committing the same offence is not pinged as it ruins the spectacle.
- As Ireland were being dominated their characteristic cheating was brought into focus and many penalties were awarded.
- Bloke in green top observed 18 pens. @6:25 ish.
- Clarification that it might be considered as 28 penalties due to compound effects, to ensure like for like comparison, how many compound pens did SA commit?
- Many times they were warned about but continued to transgress - 🤷‍♂️
- When Ireland did put pressure on SA, their preponderance to kill the game was also observed.
- A perception that SA wanted to leave "lasting scars"! Just bullying teams and scraping a win does not leave lasting scars. Putting 40+ points past a team with a mix of domination and intelligent rugby would have left that impression but the whole story the video is about how poorly Ireland played yet still apart from a number of stupid errors they were close.
- They agreed the decision on Green 10 was wrong @29:45 ish - why would you not pick up on that? They observed if that had been Red the game might have been different - seems very adjacent to my comment offered on 23 Nov.
- They considered that SA were pinged off the park at the end - but if Ireland a e trying to build momentum and pressure and SA are killing the game and Ireland have been hammered for similar infringements then SA should also be pinged. Some might call it balancing things up other might call it being consistent.
- They considered that Ireland could have had more pens awarded against them including a few more penalty tries.
- Pace of scrum resets - if you want to dominate keep the pace up!

Stopped looking around 47 mins as they were on provincial rugby.

Two final points:
- Not a refereeing point but the notion that SA should have been 30 pts ahead demonstrates again the limited desire to play rugby by both sides.
- A bad month for World Rugby and red cards!
