Referees in England
Exclusive: Steve Borthwick has raised as many as 40 examples of persistent side-entries by Wallabies, prompting player-safety concerns

Originally in the Telegraph but paywalled so cribbed from elsewhere:
England head coach Steve Borthwick met with match referee Nika Amashukeli, according to The Daily Telegraph, to bring to his attention numerous side entries at the ruck by Wallabies players during this year’s Rugby Championship.

The laws of the game state: “An arriving player must be on their feet and join from behind their offside line; a player may join alongside but not in front of the hindmost player.”

Neither Rugby Australia nor the Rugby Football Union have commented.

We all recognise what is occurring in show biz and perhaps this observation should have come from WR but it hasn't. It has been allowed to fester and has been normalised but should a national coach highlight the issue on the eve of a test match?

Perhaps he has been reading the posts here and thought why not?

I dunno, the standard protocol now is for refs to meet the coaches. So presumably WR welcome the coach arriving with a grievance list .. as they couldn't have expected anything different

Unfortunately that is the level of effective intelligence some of our "top" players frequently demonstrate:rolleyes:

However if WR welcome the coaches raising grievances why have they allowed the game to deviate and degenerate so far. Coaches should be expected to exploit as far as they are allowed. WR should counter that effect by setting focus for referees on common and emerging transgressions.

WR as guardians of the Laws should reassert their responsibility to steward the game and manage any situations where the deviation becomes widespread so as to change the game. Or accept that the Laws need changing and deal appropriately.

After all it should apply quality principles like all other systems do.

I would not expect an updated law book any time soon.
This is the WR that writes a clarification, and then issues a new law book that does not include it.
And the WR that credits a graphic designer but not a professional editor or technical author.

But, we have two options.
Either, every single referee has decided off their own bat to ignore certain laws.
Or, there is a directive from WR, which we mortals are not privy to.

All part of a media plan, then press is briefed to stir up pressure on the officials.
