And what happens when an opponent gets involved? Gets a tip on the pass, knocks the ball out of a hand etc?

I think the best would be a realtime alert just for the refs, maybe a buzzer on their arm or similar. The same process would alert the TMO with it time stamped on their feeds.

The buzzer would let the ref know that the ball has recorded a forward pass, the ref can then decide to either stop the game, play advantage, or ignore if they believe there was an external factor like an oppo deflecting or similar.
