Truck and trailer from Line out

Same situation, red forms up and walks through the black line. Black wait until they are through before attempting to tackle, but at this stage they hit the side of the "maul", players bound to the ball carrier - ball remains at the front.

Is this obstruction?
No.

i cant see it is. Its no different from an outside centre supporting a line just inside a winger between a defender coming across

So Guys, two weeks and we still can't decide what the right outcome is between us?
Hopefully it doesn't occur in any of our matches on Saturday.

Why is leaving the lineout clarified as a group exercise warranting a PK as opposed to just 1 or 2 etc?
Why a group? I suspect it’s because when we’ve seen this used as a tactic it requires the whole defense to play along. Otherwise, if only 1 or 2 players engage and the rest stand twiddling their respective thumbs then either they all get trampled, or they step back far enough and get pinged under 18.38 for leaving the lineout, or they step out the way expecting a PK and watch bemused as the huddle - who are switched on enough to keep the BC at the front as a meat shield - walks the rest of the way to the in-goal for a try.

*edit to clarify the BC must stay at the front to be open to a tackle.

But if more than one are bound onto the ball carrier in open play this is illegal as written in the laws.

I'm not sure that there's much disagreement, is there? Ball at the front, attackers at a brisk walk, defenders not committing - try?

I know Volun but once the ball/players have left the line of touch it is open play though. That's why players move up to back foot and don't stay on original 10M mark.
It really would be useful if WR actually defined the FW rather than leaving us all to work it out. One thing that I think helps steer my thinking was the July 2022 Law change summary that had:
…banning pre-bound pods in open play (flying wedge)…
so my mind has that if it didn’t form in open play, I can say it’s not a FW and sell it. Not ideal but good enough.

As it stands now, no issue for me. They can waltz the length of the pitch and as long as the ball stays at the front it’s a try.

I like that Volun, Pre-formed but not in open play therefore allowed.
I'll use that should it ever happen again.
Agree, try.
the only devils advocate query Id have for that is what defines "open play" - seeing as the ball has been thrown in (ie end of dead ball, and its not a PK/FK), caught, brought down and a phalanx formed... is that not "open play" ?

Open play would not commence until the lineout is over.

cheers

so once the ball "maul"/ phalanx has moved past the offside l;ines etc yeah? maybe a metre of two?

So a team could form up at a FK, all p[re bound and the BC at the fornt tap and "go" all together - this wasnt prebound in open play etc ?

When the ball leaves the lineout open play resumes.
It is specifically forbidden to do this from a FK/PK.
