Where are you this weekend? - 2025/26

A rare AR 2 appointment this early in the season. Cumbria Cup Semi final Keswick v Upper Eden.. Should be a close game and might even get back to watch Barrow RL v York in challenge cup!

This weekend I was supposed to be at Billingham v Macclesfield however I am now at:-

  • Hull Ionians v Wharfedale

4th v 8th but 18 pts apart. Ionians much better than the last couple of years with a change of management and a few new faces - eg: Greg Minikin - ex Castleford Tigers.

Wharfedale having a disappointing season by their standards but we'll see what happens.

Sunderland vs Northern (L6 5th vs 1st) was the plan, but frozen off looks like we’ll have another go next weekend.

Also have Durham University women’s vs the Univeristy of Alberta so one hell of an away trip! Should be fun

This weekend I am AR2 (what else?) in N2N at:-

  • Otley v Rossendale

11th v 14th - 15pts apart. Rossendale now bottom after Scunthorpe's surprising win at Fylde and it's looking like a quick return to L5 for them. Otley have struggled this season and got walloped 29-0 last week. Cross Green at Otley is still hanging in there despite numerous rumours or relocating. It still looks like it did in 1979 when the North beat the All Blacks.

Expecting an uninspiring trudge about in the mud - but, you never know.

Early appointments this week Wigton v Consett Regional North 2 Level 6. Will probably be another tough day for the home team.
No game last week.
Even before the frost, 4 games were called off in the county with teams unable to field sides including 2 level 7 league matches. Very worrying.

BUCS game Friday night. 5ths Vs 6ths of the same institute. Reverse fixture was a little one-sided. Sunday AR1 in a Women's prem game. Not worked with the ref before.

This weekend I am AR2 in N2N at:-

  • Hull v Tynedale

13th v 2nd. Hull now really in the s**t following Scunthorpe's two consecutive wins - the latter against Hull last weekend. Tynedale only 3 pts off top but have played three games more than Sheffield who hold the honours.

It's coming round to that time of the season when "happy with their lot" clubs will be weighing up their options of avoiding promotion, made more complicated this year by the N2/N1 playoff scenario(s).

Can't see anything other than an away win but Hull will keep "scrapping". ;)

Santa Fe or Prescott.

After spending 5 years abroad saving the Free World, we're doing the first of our road trips around the US. Arizona, Texas and New Mexico first up. If we like any of them, it might end up being where we settle down for a bit.

Weather depending:

Wednesday
Cardiff Met VIII V Bristol IV (Bucs)
Saturday
Cowbridge Y V Nantymoel Y
Sunday
Llandaff Nth U15 V St Peters U15
AR1
Pontyclun L V Clwb Rygbi Caerdydd L

The Weekend games have to be in doubt, but the Wednesday is on 3G so that should go ahead.

Northern Illinois @ UofI Women - a series of 7s scrimmages. Doing it to get a run out, and because no one else would drive 3 hours to do it.

NIU rocked up with 8, Illinois had 20+. Players were mixed up so everyone got to get some game time.

This week - St Pats 7s down in Rolla, MO.

D2 Mens and D3 womens divisions, winners automatically qualify for nationals. 2-day event and 2 fields, so fingers crossed the logistics are smoother

Did an U16 girls game on Saturday gone at the 7s Stadium. Abu Dhabi Small Blacks v Dubai Sharks B. Finished 61-5. Good 40 minute run out in 30 degrees.
Warning sirens went off on the drive home. Missiles were being intercepted above me in Dubai. Can't say I noticed much until I got home. I thought the noise was from the transmission of a lorry that was next to me. I live further north. Had a few missiles up here being taken out yesterday (Sunday) and a drone has left a significant dent in the road not too far from me. A little bit hair raising.

Not sure if it will happen but I am down as 4th official for the WASP fixture between Jebel Ali Dragons v Dubai Sharks, again at the 7s Stadium, on Saturday coming. I am doubtful it will go ahead.

Got 2 of the four in. The Ladies game was expertly refereed by a participant on this forum. Well done Niall
